Hub City Motors 8 Equipment Ltd. 841 Central St. 564-7228 DLN 5365 CHICAGO (AP) — Most Americans believe their feet are beautiful even when they ache, and some folks think even the aching is normal, shows a poll which purports to be the first major survey of feelings towards feet. The Gallup Poll was conducted for Dr. Scholl’s Inc. and the American Podiatry Association by The American Institute of Public Opinion at Princeton, N.J. The results reveal some “alarming misconceptions,” the two sponsoring groups say. For example, the study found that 73 per cent of people over the age of 18 reported that their feet hurt, and 62 per cent consider the condition normal. The younger the respondent, the more likely he or she was to believe that aching feet are a natural condition. The poll shows 75 per cent of Americans spend RECORDS by DAVE MARSH ELVIS COSTELLO; PUNCH THE CLOCK (Columbia). Four Stars The two best songs here, Shipbuilding and Pills and Soap, move Costello out of his insularity and into the kind of social comment that made his first three albums so vigorous and rich, albeit with vey different musical overtones and emotional perspective. The catchiest number here, Everyday I Write the Book, simply has a better melody than most of the rest. Costello’s pun-ridden lyrics and Steve Nieve’s piano playing are the principal points of interest on the rest. But there’s no denying that it would be swell to hear him make rock as nasty and powerful as This Year’s Model and Armed Forces once more. Until then, we’ll settle for his pop phrasing and occasional ability to make sense of things (like the Falk-lands war — in Shipbuilding) in a way that no other rock musician can do. ★ ★ ★ SMOKEY ROBINSON: BLAME IT ON LOVE AND ALL THE GREAT HITS (Tamla) Four Stars Though the three new numbers aren’t up to his finest standard. Smokey’s solo repertoire is well-represented in this set which features Cruisin’, Being With You, Let Me Be The Clock and Baby Come Close. While not quite as lyrically inventive as his Miracles numbers, these solo songs, which span Robinson’s career on his own, show him as an ever more confident vocal stylist with an increasingly sophisticated sense of composition and arrangement. ★ ★ ★ JOHNNY CASH; JOHNNY 99 (Columbia). Three Stars Ironically this is Cash’s best album in some time despite the presence of Bruce Sprinsteen’s Highway Patrolman and Jonny 99, which seemed tail-lormade for Cash in their original versions. (One suspects that Johnny’s recent Ashbury Park real estate investrents, and the fact that producer Brian Ahern i longtime Springsteen enthusiast, accounts for • i.eir inclusion). Ahern keeps the rest of the mu^ic clean and simple and Cash seems involved in a way he rasrely has in recent years, which makesa most of the rest of the album pleasurable in a minor way. more than four hours a day on their feet, and half of those who complained of foot problems attributed the pain to “being on their feet a lot.” One misconception pointed up by the survey is the belief that having sore feet is normal, said Dr. Charles Gudas, a podiatrist at the University of Chicago and a member of the National Foot Health Board. “Tired, aching feet at the end of the day is not a normal condition,” Gudas said. “It means you have a functional imbalance or static deformities like fallen arches, ingrown toenails.” For 33 per cent of those surveyed, the pain of standing for hours was worsened by uncomforta- ble — but fashionable — shoes. Nevertheless, 22 per cent of women surveyed said they wouldn’t give up their high heels even if they believed the shoes were damaging their feet. Twenty per cent of men and 45 per cent of women said they would put up with uncomfortable shoes for the sake of looking good. Women between the ages of 18 and 24 were most likely to follow the dictates of fashion to the detriment of their toes. Another common misconceptions is the belief that shoes are harmful. They actually are not, Gudas said, noting that most chronic problems are hereditary.
