THE CITIZEN, Prince George — Monday, February 6, 1984 — 15 NILL TO BOSTON McNab key VANCOUVER (CP) - Centre Peter McNab, a 31-year-old, 11-year National Hockey League veteran, has joined the Vancouver Canucks after being traded Friday by the Boston Bruins. The Canucks sent winger Jim Nill to the Bruins for McNab in an effort to strengthen the Vancouver centre ice position. The son of New Jersey Devils’ general manager Max McNab, Peter was born here, but left at age 10. “I’m just going to find my niche there. I know they have two great centremen now in (Patrik) Sundstrom and (Thomas) Gradin. I’ll just feel my way on the third line I guess.” McNab, who has been on the trading block for some two years, is paid about $130,000 (U.S.) per season and has the remainder of this year and his option year left. McNab had 14 goals and 30 points with limited ice time in 52 games with the Bruins, with whom he was plus seven. He’s scored 312 NHL goals, beginning his pro career with the Buffalo Sabres and being signed by Boston as a free agent in 1976. Nill, 25, had nine goals and six assists for 15 points in 51 games with the Canucks this season, working mainly on a checking line. He came to Vancouver in a 1982 trade which sent goaltender Glen Hanlon to the St. Louis Blues. Nill played for Canada in the 1980 Olympic Games at Lake Placid, N.Y. Eager Wings edge Bruins by Canadian Press Detroit is back in Norris Division playoff territory after doing to the Bruins what few National Hockey League teams dare hope for. ' The victories, combined with the Williams Lake Mustangs’ loss in Grande Prairie Friday to the North Stars, clinched the PCJHL title for the Kings. Prince George is 13 points ahead of Williams Lake with six games remaining for both clubs. “I’m really happy with that,” said Kings’ coach Bill Bell, who missed the trip because of business commitments. “Everyone wanted to wrap up the league so we could concentrate on the playoffs.” The 7-4 victory Sunday in Grande Prairie was the clincher. Prince George dumped Dawson Creek 8-3 Friday and Fort St. John 8-5 Saturday, then completed their first northern sweep this season. Prince George has a 36-8 record. The Kings have won their past 18 games and are undefeated in 21 at home. briefly They play host to the PCJHL all-star game Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at the Coliseum. Last-place Dawson Creek, with its two losses, became the first PCJHL team eliminated from the playoff race. The Kodiaks are 14 points behind the fourth-place Quesnel Millionaires with six games remaining. The Millionaires swept all three games of their northern swing as well, giving them a commanding five-point lead over the fifth-place Huskies. Fort St. John lost all three of its weekend home games. Dawson Creek meets the Huskies in Fort St. John Tuesday. The Spruce Kings visit Williams Lake Friday. Morrison out SARAJEVO, Yugoslavia (CP) — Prince George native Mark Morrison and Don Dietrich of Deloraine, Man., are among four players declared ineligible for the Winter Games, the International Olympic Committee announced today. The IOC settled the battle within its ranks over hockey eligibility by deciding that being under contract to a National Hockey League team makes a player a professional. Hockey, the first event of these Games, is scheduled to begin Tuesday and the IOC ruling means Jim Corsi and Rich Bragnalo, two members of the Italian team, also are ineligible. Five others whose amateur status was under question after a protest by Finland — including Team Canada , forward Dan Wood of Toronto — will be allowed to play. Two Austrian players — Toronto native Rick Cunningham, who played two seasons with the Toronto Toros of the defunct World Hockey Association, and Greg Holst of Montreal, who appeared in two games with the New York Rangers during the 1975-76 season — have been cleared to participate. The others are Italian Thomas Milani and Bjoern Skaare of Norway. The United States Olympic Committee had questioned the eligibility of a fourth Canadian, first-string goaltender Mario Gosselin of Thet-ford Mines, Que. However, Gosselin’s name did not appear on the' IOC list of ineligibles. Morrison played nine games with the Rangers two seasons ago and Dietrich was with the Chicago Black Hawks earlier this season. Corsi, a goaltender from Montreal, spent one NHL season with the Edmonton Oilers and Bragnalo, a forward from Thunder Bay, Ont., played parts of two seasons with the Washington Capitals. Nelford close PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Hale Irwin won the $400,000 Bing Crosby pro-am golf tournament Sunday on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff with Jim Nelford of Burnaby. Both Irwin and Nelford finished the regulation 72 holes tied at 278, 10 under par. Irwin, given a second chance when his tee shot on the last regulation hole bounced back after hitting a rock on the shoreline, birdied the second hole of the playoff after converting a spectacular shot out of the sand. They made routine pars on the 15th hole, the first of the playoff, and Nelford — still seeking his first Professional Golfers’ Association Tour title — seemed to have the edge again when Irwin drove into a fairway bunker on the next hole. Nelford got his in the fairway. Seconds after TV commentators announced, with obvious confidence, Irwin had “no chance to get it on the green,” he played a beautiful shot about 3.7 metres from the cup. After Nelford missed his long birdie attempt, Irwin rapped his in for the 16th title of his career. This one was worth $72,000. Richard Zokol of Vancouver closed with a 72 for a 289 total and earned $2,025. Dan Halldorson of Winnipeg missed the cut Saturday. Survives 18th NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) -Patty Sheehan survived a double-bogey on the 18th hole to post a two-stroke victory over Sherri Turner in a $175,000 Ladies’ Professional Golf Association tournament Sunday. Sheehan shot par 72 at the 6,092-yard Turnberry Isle course, bringing her four-round total to a tournament-record eight-under-par 280. With earlier rounds of 71, 68 and 69, Sheehan got a cheque of $26,250 for her first LPGA win this year and ninth since joining the tour in July, 1980. Moon decides HOUSTON (AP) -His name is not on the dotted line yet, but free agent quarterback Warren Moon has decided to cast his lot with the woeful the Houston Oilers. Moon, the first pro quarterback to pass for 5,000 yards in a season and the most valuable player last year in the Canadian Football League, told Oiler officials Friday night through his lawyer Leigh Steinberg he will play for Houston next season. Moon, who played with the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL when they won five Grey Cups in six seasons, was also negotiating with the Seattle Seahawks. Hugh Campbell, Moon’s former coach at Edmonton, was hired by the Oilers recently to be their head coach. Steinberg told the Oilers, Hyde said, Moon could not actually sign with Houston until his contract with the Eskimos expires March 1. At a hastily-called news conference at his Redmond, Wash., home, Moon disclosed he had opted for Houston’s five-year contract, estimated at $4.5 million. Moon said he felt he’d “be a fool” to turn down the guaranteed money Houston was offering. The Seahawks were reported to have offered him $6 million for five years, but the money was not guaranteed, he said. Canada.
