CFL SUCCESS JOINS LIST OF GREATS Gooden chasing milestone NEW YORK (AP) - In less than two seasons in the major leagues, Dwight Goodfen, the pitching ace of the New York Mets, has etched his name alongside some of baseball’s great players. He will try for still another line in the record books Sunday when he attempts to become the youngest 20-game winner in major league history. Gooden, 19-3, will shoot for No. 20 against the San Diego Padres in New York. Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians was 20 years, 10 months and nine days old when he won his 20th in 1939. Gooden is 20 years, nine months and six days. The overpowering Gooden won his 19th Tuesday night, striking 16, a major-league season high, and scattering seven hits in a 3-0 National League victory over San Francisco Giants. It was another masterpiece in Gooden’s masterful career. It was his 13th straight victory — the best in the majors this year. It reduced his earned-run average to 1.74 — best in the majors. It gave him 208 strikeouts — the most by any pitcher, this year and made him the first National Leaguer to record 200 strikeouts in his first two major leagues seasons. Only Herb Score of the Indians, of the American League in 1955 and 1956, accomplished the same feat. It matched Gooden’s career high in strikeouts and was the 23rd time in his major league career he struck out at least 10 batters in a game. It was his sixth shutout of the season. No pitcher has more this year. “You’re looking at something special,” said Mets manager Dave Johnson. “You probably won’t ever see anybody at his age who dominates so completely. “At 19 and 20, he’s 36 and 12 in two seasons. He wins three of every four games he pitches in the big leagues.” The Shea Stadium fans also know they’re seeing something special. Each time Gooden strikes out an opposing batter, they begin clapping rhythmically-. When Gooden gets two strikes on a hitter, the clapping is accompanied by yelling, building to a crescendo with each succeeding pitch. "I can understand the way these fans feel about Gooden,” said Mets first baseman Keith Hernandez. “I’ve Bad year for Soto PITTSBURGH (AP) — Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mario Soto, who has suffered a ca-reer-high 14 losses this baseball season, has another dubious distinction: He is leading National League pitchers in home runs surrendered. Soto surrendered home run No. 25 Tuesday to Jason Thompson of the Pittsburgh Pirates, whose round-tripper meant the winning run as Pittsburgh snapped a 1-1 tie and beat Cincinnati, 3-2. Soto,* now 10-14, had never previously suffered 14 losses in a season since he began as a minor-league pitcher in 1975 at Eugene, Ore. He finished 14-13 in 1982 with the Reds and 17-13 in 1983. JAYS, EXPOS FALL Mets' cushion dwindling A pair of ninth-inning home runs Wednesday night cut the New York Mets’ lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League East baseball to a half-game. Pinch-hitting Darrell Porter hit a three-run homer in the final inning, breaking a 4-4 tie, as St. Louis beat the Houston Astros 7-4. San Francisco’s Bob Brenly turned ’around a 2-1 Mets lead with a two-run homer in the ninth as the Giants beat New York 3-2. Brenly connected after a one-out single by Chris Brown off Roger McDowell, 6-5, who had relieved starter Ed Lynch to begin the inning. In other National League games, it was: Los Angeles Dodgers 15, Philadelphia Phillies 6; San Diego Padres 6, Montreal Expos 2; Cincinnati* Reds 8, Pittsburgh Pirates 5; and Chicago Cubs 9, Atlanta Braves 5. In the American League, it was: Cleveland Indians 5, Toronto Blue Jays 2; Oakland A’s 4, Detroit Tigers 3; Kansas City Royals 2, Chicago White Sox 1; Milwaukee Brewers 3, Minnesota Twins 2; and Texas Rangers 5, Boston Red Sox 3. Pinch-hitter Howard Johnson had given the Mets a 2-1 lead in the eighth with his eighth .homer, but Brenly homered in the ninth. Brenly’s 17 home runs lead San Francisco and put him in line to become the first Giants catcher to lead the team in homers since Buck Ewing did it in 1885. His homer made Dave LaPoint, 6-11, the winner. Pinch-hitter Andy Van Slyke of the Cardinals led off the ninth with a single off Houston reliever Dave Smith, 6-5. One out later, Ozzie Smith singled and Porter homered, his seventh of the season. Jeff Lahti, 2-1, pitched the last 1 2-3 innings for the victory. Candy Maldonado went 5-for-6 and Mike Marshall was 4-for-6, including the fourth grand slam of his major-league career as the Dodgers whipped the Phillies. Nick Esasky hit a two-run homer, his 14th of the year in Cincinnati’s win over the Pirates. Pete Rose had a single and two RBI and needs 14 hits to break Ty Cobb’s career record of 4,191 hits. Neal Heaton pitched a six-hitter for Cleveland against Toronto. Joe Carter homered and drove in two runs and Julio Franco added two RBIs in support of Heaton, 7-13, who pitched his fourth complete game. The Blue Jays trailed 3-0 after four innings but scored twice in the fifth when Jesse Barfield and Cecil Fielder homered to centre. Pass catchers kef said it before: He might just be the greatest pitcher of all time.” Prior to Tuesday night’s game, Gooden had been cuffed in his last start for five runs on eight hits in only five innings by Philadelphia Phillies. After that game, Johnson looked at the schedule, calculated his star pitcher’s next start and said: “I feel sorry for San Francisco.” Tuesday night, Gooden made the Giants look sorry. “I would say it was one of my better games,” Gooden conceded. The only San Francisco starter who did not strike out was outfielder Chili Davis. He singled three times and grounded out sharply in four at-bats. Unlike Davis, most of the other Giants appeared defensive at the plate. Rookie third baseman Chris Brown said when he was batting in the fourth inning, he saw one pitch leave Gooden’s hand and did not see the ball again until it reappeared in the glove of Mets catcher Gary Carter. “Dwight Gooden threw the ball, and when it reappeared, it had gone past me,” Brown said, in awe. by GRANT KERR Canadian Press It’s generally agreed the premier wide receivers in the Canadian Football League are Terry Greer of the Toronto Argonauts and Mer-vyn Fernandez of the British Columbia Lions. They have size, blazing speed, soft hands and exceptional jumping ability. When defences lay back, they catch first-down passes. When single coverage is evident, Greer and Fernandez talce it deep for six. Greer will match up against a former teammate this week when the Argos host Ottawa Roughriders. Lamont Meacham draws the task of covering a receiver who has caught 36 passes for 576 yards and six touchdowns already this season. Donovan Rose of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats goes against Fernandez on Saturday night at B.C. Place Stadium, with Fernandez coming off a seven-catch, 259-yard, four-touchdown game against Calgary. Another wide receiver to watch will be Chris Woods of the Edmonton Eskimos. He’s averaging a phenomenal 29 yards a catch this year and will draw coverage Friday from rookie Eddie Ray Walker of Saskatchewan Rough-riders. OTTAWA (3-3) at Toronto (3-4) The Rough Riders are winless on the road this season, with every defeat west of Ontario. Quarterback J. C. Watts has only six scoring throws in 200 pass attempts, despite four import receivers in Waymon Alridge, Mike Caterbone, Daric Zeno and Mark Barousse. Mark Casale will be the starting pivot for the Argos in the battle for second place in the East. Casale should be able to pass short against the Ottawa zone defence, especially the hitch screen to Greer. Toronto by four points tonight on passes to SASKATCHEWAN (3-3) at EDMONTON (3- 3) The Roughriders have problems at quarterback. Joe Paopao is hurt and Homer Jordan has difficulty getting the ball to speedy wide receivers Mike Elarms and Stefan Jones. The Eskimos should control this game with their running, providing pivot Matt Dunigan ets decent yardage on first downs. Edmonton as been unbeatable at Commonwealth Stadium. Edmonton by three points Friday on the scrambling of Dunigan. HAMILTON (1-5) at B.C. (5-1) The Tiger-Cats’ only victory this season came on the road when rookie quarterback Ken Hobart got hot in Montreal. Hamilton has cooled off with two straight losses as teams catch on to Hobart’s tendency to run instead of pass. The Lions are coming off a humbling loss to Calgary. Quarterback Roy Dewalt will have to be more efficient than last week when he often missed key second-down passes. B.C. beat Hamilton 42-8 in early July. B.C. by seven points Saturday with a sharper Dewalt CALGARY (1-5) at WINNIPEG (4-2) The Stampeders won for the first time de- Tennis win for Becker MASON, Ohio (AP) — Boris Becker used a high-powered serve to beat Brian Teacher 6-4, 6-4 Wednesday night and advance to the third round of the Association of Tennis Professionals championship. Becker, the 17-year-old West German who won Wimbledon, joined four seeded Swedish players in the round of 16. Two-time defending champion Mats Wilander of Sweden easily won his second match of the $375,000 tournament, demolishing Pavel Slozil of Czechoslovakia 6-1, 6-3. Other seeded winners were Anders Jarryd, Stefan Edberg and Joakim Nystrom of Sweden and Yannick Noah of New York City. Becker blistered Teacher with 11 aces, often coming from behind in a game on the strength of his serve. Men's golf leader surprised SASKATOON (CP) - They were a study in contrast, but Craig Benson of Lloydmin-ster, Sask., and Ken Wasslen of Calgary both carded 68s to take the first-round lead after Wednesday’s play at the Canadian amateur golf championship. . Benson, who seemed surprised by his performance, carried a hot putter all day. He three-putted only one green and scored seven birdies. But Taking the lead is old hat for Wasslen, who helped the Alberta team to a 211, tops in Willingdon Cup team play. He has won four tournament’s this year, including the* Calgary city amateur. Danny Coulombe of Westfield, N.B., was alone at sec- ond with a 69. There was a five-way tie for third place. Steve Berry of Vancouver, Brent Franklin of Calgary, Stephane Houle of Victoriavilie, Que., Mike Baker of Calgary and Ron Stewart of Prince Albert, Sask., all carded 70s. WINDSOR JUNCTION. N.S. With two rounds to play, Wyatt has a 36-hole total of 149, one stroke better than two Americans — defending champion Kimberley Wil--j— liams of Bethesda, Md., who also had a 77, and Kathleen McCarthy of Fresno, Calif., who shot a 78. Sharon Smith of Ancaster, Ont., shot the day’s best score of 72 to move two strokes back at 151. She’s tied with Laurel Kean of Willoughby, Ohio, who had a 74. Mary Ouellette of Millino-cket, Me., is three back at 152 while Judy Medlicott of Calgary and Brenda Burns of Mississaugua, Ont., are five back at 154. Incentive provided TORONTO (CP) — The battle for sole possession of second place in the East Division aside, there will be plenty of added incentive for a number of players when the Ottawa Rough Riders and Toronto Argonauts get Week 8 of the Canadian Football League season under way tonight. Each club has six points, four back of the first-place Montreal Concordes and just four clear of the cellar-dwelling Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Concordes draw the bye this week, while the Ticats have the dubious honor of going up against the CFL’s best club, the 5-1 B.C. Lions, on Saturday in Vancouver. The remainder of the week’s activity consists of a Friday meeting in Edmonton between the Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders and a game Sunday in Winnipeg where the Bombers will entertain Calgary Stampeders. There stre a total of 11 former Argos on the Ottawa roster and six ex-Riders with Toronto, many of whom will be out to prove that their former employer erred in discarding them. Three starters in the Ottawa secondary — Jo Jo Heath, Ralph Dixon and Lamont Meacham — are former Argos, as are punter Ken Clark and piacekicker Dean Dorsey. There’s also offensive linemen Kevin Powell and Mike Hameluck, slotback Steve Hall, linebacker Rick Sowieta, defensive tackle Ron Engleson and running back Lester Brown. Toronto’s ex-Riders are comerback Carl Brazley, linebackers William Mitchell and Dan Rashovich, defensive lineman Mark Seale, centre Ian Beckstead and quarterback Condredge Holloway. _ The Routh Riders viist the Argonauts at 4:30 tonight on CKPG (channel 2, cable 3).
