  WASHINGTON (AP) — Pregnant women who are overly concerned about controlling their weight may risk their unborn child, a U.S. government study says.
   The study, released by the National Centre for Health Statistics, said women who gain less than 16 pounds during pregnancy have about three*times the rate of fetal deaths as women who gain between 26 and 35 pounds.
   The study, based on a sample of nearly 16,000 pregnancies, suggested current guidelines for weight gain may.be too conservative.
   Most doctor* now believe proper weight gain during pregnancy should be between 22 and 27 pounds, the centre said. But the new figures
 fetal loss late in pregnancy, roughly after the 28th week.
   And children bom alive to women with little weight gain tended to be small babies, who have more health problems and higher infant* mortality rates, the study said.
   It said women who gained less than 16 pounds during pregnancy had a fetal death rate of 10.5 for every 1,000 live births.

Antibiotic possibility for B.C. plant
   VICTORIA (CP) - A British Columbia scientist says he has discovered a native plant rich enough in a potent antibiotic to be a potential commercial source of the drug.
   “We’ve got an English company looking at it to see if it is as interesting as we think it is,” said Neil Towers, a University of B.C. botanist who has been working for 18 months on the plant commonly known as false yarrow.
   Towers said his research shows the plant to be rich in thiarubrine-A, an antibiotic also found in a family of African plants.
   Provincial Museum botanist Leo Pavlick said false yarrow grows in open, somewhat rocky places, chiefly the plains and foothills, and is common in the gravelly, sandy soil of the B.C. Interior between the coastal mountains and the Rockies.
   It has small, creamy white or pink flowers branching in twos and threes at the end of a single stem less than 10 centimetres high.
   Towers said his work is supported by the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council, a federal agency.

   Dear Ann Landers: I was interested in your comments on the overuse of “OK” and decided to do a little research on it. “OK” was first used in 1839 by C. K. Greene, the editor of the Boston Post, as an abbreviation of “oil korrect,” a facetious misspelling of “all correct.” Given meanings were — approval, endorsement, accepted as legitimate or correct.
   While there are no hard statistics to prove it, one can safely assume that the most widely used American word in the world is “OK.” Spaniards utter it more often than “salud” and in England it is more common than “righto.” Even speakers of the Djabo dialet in Liberia say “O-ke.”
   “OK” freely punctuates the conversations of people who do not know another word of English. During a World War II soccer match, a team comprised of Poles, Czechs, Danes and Norwegians was hamstrung by their language differences until a Polish player shouted “OK!” Everyone on the team knew what that meant, and from then on the play proceeded smoothly.
   In 1840, when Martin Van Buren was running for re-election, the Democrats banded together under the banner of the New York Democratic OK club and soon after the word became part of the language to signify that what is OK is all right. — Mrs. J.H.R., Renton, Wa.

   That woman should understand that the problem is between her and her husband and not between
 her and his ex-wife. She should enlist her husband’s support — tell him it is destructive to their marriage when he has secrets with his former spouse. She should be as sweet as honey to the witch and refuse to become involved in any ugliness that can only make her look bad. And most of all she should make a real friend out of that stepson, no matter how bratty and hard-to-handle he may be. That child is her husband’s and unless she makes peace with him and turns that situation around her marriage will be forever in danger. This is the best advice she’ll ever get.
