Walker Senior Vice-President Western Canada Edmonton, Alta ma-l-mo Swimmers in again after shark attack PORT ARANSAS, Tex. (AP) -Thousands of people frolicked on the surf after officials decided to keep beaches open today even though a teenager lost an arm in a shark attack. April Dawn Voglino, 16, of King-sland was attacked by a 1.5-metre shark and was in serious but stable condition Sunday after undergoing surgery at Memorial Medical Centre in Corpus Christi, hospital officials said. The shark swam away after the girl’s father pounded on it. One of April’s arms was severed about 15 centimetres above the elbow in Saturday’s attack. Nueces County Commissioner J. P. Luby, whose jurisdiction covers 35 kilometres of beaches, said the attack was an isolated case and de- cided against closing beaches. The Easter holiday weekend drew more at least 100,000 people to the area, Luby said. The teenager was in chest-deep water near Mustang Island when the shark attacked her. Robert Voglino, who was swimming with his daughter, pounded on the shark as the girl attempted to swim to shore. Voglino was uninjured and carried his daughter ashore after the shark swam away, authorities said. Andre Landry, a fish behavior expert from Texas AM University at Galveston, said there have been between only about 15 documented shark attacks along the Texas coast within the last 100 years. He said it is the time of year sharks swim in shallow waters to raise their young. Smelter emissions kill Manitoba lakes WINNIPEG (CP) - Emissions of cadmium, zinc arid copper from the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. plant in Flin Flon are killing aquatic life in northern lakes, says a federal scientist. Jack Klaverkamp, a division manager with the Freshwater Institute of the Department of Fisheries, said the plant, about 650 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, has been emitting high levels of dangerous metals for more than 50 years. Unless the smelter curbs its emissions, fish and other aquatic life will die, he said. Even if the emissions ended today it could take 10 years to see signs of change. Wayne Fraser, Hudson Bay’s director of safety and the environment, said about 90 per cent of the metals emitted by the stacks are recovered through a filtering process and a device that uses an electric charge to attract metal particles to wires. Klaverkamp and a group of researchers collected 300 fish and mud samples from 13 lakes near Flin Flon and Thompson, about 700 kilometres north of Winnipeg. The study found levels of cadmium in the mud were sometimes 50 times higher than levels considered safe for aquatic life. Levels of zinc and copper, non-poisonous metals, were sometimes 100 times higher than normal. HYDRO PESTICIDE USE PERMIT B C Hydro, 3333 - 22nd Avenue, Prince George, telephone 563-0282, has received a permit for the use of glyphosate PCP No. 13644 for control of all tall growing vegetation on electrical transmission line right-of-way circuits 5L1, 5L2, 5L3, and 1L365 in the Bear Lake area, less than 200 hectares All treatments are by selective application, such as hack-and-squirt. capsule injection, and cut surface Pesticide use will be carried out between 1 May 1987 and 31 October 1989 A copy of the Permit 105-374-87/89 and maps may be viewed at B.C Hydro's office in Pnnce George during normal working hours Cadmium levels in the livers and kidneys of fish were 13 times higher than in fish from other Manitoba lakes. “We’ve dived in lakes around Flin Flon and in some there is no sign of life at all,” Klaverkamp said. “The lakes are just dead. “In a Canadian context, this problem is not as serious as acid rain. But it is a very serious matter locally. “The lakes are not going to go acidic and be dangerous to people, but there simply won’t be any fish in most lakes.” Cadmium, a metal 1,000 times more toxic than zinc or copper, presents no danger to humans because it settles to the bottom of the lake rather than remaining in drinking water, he said. It also is not easily absorbed by human intestines. A natural protein produced by fish to regulate essential trace minerals has built up an immunity to cadmium, Klaverkamp said. However, the fish have also stopped reproducing. In one lake, the youngest fish collected was nine .years old and he said restocking would be a waste of time because fish from a hatchery would no be able to adapt. Klaverkamp’s study is the third showing the Hudson Bay smelter does not properly filter all dangerous pollutants. Fraser said the company is considering an $80-million system to reduce emissions of dust and sulfur dioxide, something Klaverkamp applauds. “The cadmium that is killing these fish can not be trapped by means of electrical charges,” he said. “When it leaves the stack it is a gas and it is only after it cools that it solidifies.” Worth Hayden, Manitoba’s director of fisheries, said the province will investigate Klaverkamp’s study and meet with the environmental management department to look for a solution. “We don’t like heavy metals in any of our lakes but I’m not sure there is an easy solution to this problem to solve it right away.” Sikhs slay Swiss groom CHANDIGARH, India (AP) - A young Swiss man recently married to a Sikh woman was among 11 people killed by suspected Sikh terrorists in a wave of violence reported by police Sunday. The death of Ronaldo J/allarsa, 21, was the first reported slaying of a foreigner during the six years Sikh militants have fought for a separate homeland or greater autonomy, police in the northern Punjab state said. Details of the other killings, all during the weekend, were not immediately available, but police said the victims included four members of a Hindu family and a Hindu priest. Vallarsa was married by Sikh rites in February over protests of Sikh militants who said a Sikh woman should not be allowed to marry a clean-shaven man. Hindus, whom Sikh extremists see as their oppressors, are often cleanshaven.
