THEY FEAR HIM Fish flee approach of unlucky father I mentioned last week that in 10 years of annual Charlotte Island treks, my father has never had what you could call hot fishing. He still hasn’t. I thought his good fortune this year at my favorite pond was a omen but, no, it was not. Spring salmon avoided the inlet; as did halibut and the sole which normally carpet the bottom at this time of year. The narrows cutthroat remained either sullen or absent; I’m not sure which. A full day’s soggy fishing on a generally reliable lake produced only three unusually small cutthroat. Trout, fat cutthroats, were abundant in my favorite Graham Island river but this river’s cutthroat have an unfortunately swamp-like flavor. I personally believe this is a good career move on their part and do not at all mind releaing all fish taken. My parents feel differently. They went along with fishing this river for two days but that was only because it was my birthday one day and my mother wanted a beach weenie roast on the other day. The sand dunes beside the lower river were a perfect place. Patrick, his mom and his grandma had a fine time and I fared rather well on the trout. “You are very good at catching inedible fish,” my father told me. “This is something I definitely did not teach you.” So we ended up at a Moresby Island river I have never fished in the spring. I had a reasonably hot tip and the marshy water just below this river’s lake-head has always seemed a likely cutthroat haven. Perhaps it is but we didn’t reach it. After two hours waiting by the sign warning motorists of “Danger, Wait for Logging Truck to Follow” I owed my mother $7.98 (her gin cards were ridiculously good). No truck. I debated ignoring the sign, but only briefly. So we tried the lower river — carefully working the Walk-in Hole, Barb’s Secret Drift, Perkins Pool and four other spots whose names I do not know. My father and I each released a couple of eight-inch rainbows. Walking into the two pools known as Ron’s Place (I tend to haunt them during coho season) was strictly a matter of habit, and desperation.* A half hour’s fishless fising suggested they were as barren as the other places. But then a trout rose. And then another. I switched to a dry fly (a Deer Hair Sedge) and soon had two plump cutthroat to admire, and gloat about. They were both well over a pound, lovely trout. Thoughts of a pork chop dinner began to fade. Almost. A Nelson fish dinner requires a substantial poundage of fish. Then my father came through — three perfect cutthroat. That night’s trout dinner was spectacular but we were naturally skunked on the next day, fishing the same water and a long adjoining stretch that looked perfect. That is always the way of my father’s Charlotte fishing. Mind you, I can recall every fish we have taken in the past 10 years. So can he. We can also dredge up all the obscure details of the long string of non-productive trips. I do not think my father is at all unlucky. I would say ofihand that my father has the worst Charlotte fishing luck I have seen. For 10 years now, he and my mom have been coming up for an annual safari that is always great fun but never at all rich in fish. They have come up at every time of year, too, but it is Outdoor life Ron Nelson always the same: they are a week early, or late, or the weather is impossibly grim. “Our fish fear you,” I tell my father and he agrees this must be so. This year’s trip started normally. We went on the narrows, a place where I have neer been skunked. I told my father of how sure fire this place was but he naturally gave this no credence. My father has visited too many of my sure fire spots. We reached the narrows at just the right tidal stage. A trout slashed up at my fly on the first cast, and on each of the next three casts — missing (or more likely rejecting) the fly each time. Promising, though. Then the wind hit. Fly casting was still possible, but just barely; and careful fly manipulation was impossible. Narrows cutthroat are quite picky about just how flies move. Maybe the wind put them off, too. After five hours fishing, we’d not beached even one trout. “Tell me again about all the trout you caught last week,” my father said. “I love hearing such stories.” We went to my favorite pond the next day; the pond that is absolutely stiff with native Dolly Varden char. “Maybe you should dig a few worms,” I suggested, hedging my bets. My father did (Patrick assisting) and that turned out to be a good move. The pond looked utterly dead. Not a rise, nothing. We worked halfway around the pond without anything touching our flies or the worms my father soon went over, too. “We’re too early,” I said. “I’ve seen this before, on a lot of ponds.” “Me too,” my father agreed but he elected to check out a little channel that extends from the far end of the pond. I settled onto a log at my favorite spot. Maybe trout would begin rising as the sun warmed things up. They didn’t but my father soon returned with a limit of eight - inch dollies. “It’s thick with them up in the channel. They’re rising, too. Come on.” So we crashed through the bush and floundered over the marsh to the hot hole; smiling. Five more trout — my limit — would make a decent meal. This pond’s little char are delicious. “Right here,” my father said so I began casting. Nothing. “I thought you said they were rising?” “They were.” I went to a sunken nymph, then a series of wet flies. Noting. “Perhaps you could pass me a worm.” “Used them all up.” The trout course at dinner that night was elegant but sparse. “Tell me again,’.’ I said, “about how the fish were rising before I arrived and how unlucky I am.” “Love to,” my father said.
