The Prince George Citizen — Saturday, July 18,1987 — 15 B.C/s plan simple — no turnovers :'’VANCOUVER (CP) - The unbeaten B.C. Lions want to execute a simple plan tonight when they attempt to end a frustrating series of losses against the Edmonton Eskimos in a CFL game at B.C. Place Stadium. The Lions lost three regular-season games to Edmonton in 1986 before dropping the Western Division playoff final to the Eskimos. All four defeats were by convincing margins. “All the games last season looked alike to me,” B.C. head coach Don Matthews said Friday. “Our defence controlled Edmonton fairly well, but turnovers killed (is. J “This time we’ve got to reduce the turnovers, have better kick coverage and continue to play aggressively on defence. It’s String of defeats frustrating Matthews, Lions just like any other game. We’ve got to execute and get the job done.” The Lions are coming off a 17-day layoff because of the revision of the CFL schedule following the folding of the Montreal Alouettes franchise. B.C., 2-0. last played July 1 when the Lions beat the Calgary Stampeders 40-15. A crowd of more than 40,000, the largest in the CFL this season, is expected despite an early kickoff — at 5 p.m. — to accommodate the CBC television network. The Eskimos, 2-1, are coming off a 40-30 loss to Hamilton in which they surren- dered a surprising 464 passing yards to the Tiger-Cats. Don Wilson, a former Montreal defender, will be inserted into the secondary to •replace injured cornerback Steve Benjamin. Wilson will play a halfback position, with Ron Howard moving to the corner. “It’s just a matter of time before we get the intensity up and realize, yeah, even though we went to the Grey Cup last year, we still have to play hard this year,” said Edmonton safety Junior Robinson. “Right now it’s a very tentative feeling in the secondary. We have to work through that.” There will be two more changes to the Edmonton starting lineup on defence. Tackle John Mandarich returns from an injury to replace Lloyd Mumphrey, while William Mitchell (yet another Montreal refugee) moves in at outside linebacker for Frank Balkovec. The Lions also will make several lineup changes. Linebacker Glen Jackson and blocking back John Henry White return from knee injuries, while defensive tackle Brett Williams makes his first start. Williams also was rescued from the Montreal debacle through the dispersal draft. Another B.C. switch has second-year slotback Scott Lecky making a rare start because of a knee injury to Jan Carinci. This will be the second game on the sidelines for new Edmonton head coach Joe Faragalli, who assumed the position last week after the sudden resignation of Jack Parker for health reasons. Faragalli had been head coach of the Alouettes. The other CFL game this weekend has the Saskatchewan Roughriders (0-2-1) visiting the Ottawa Rough Riders (2-1) Sunday. The Eskimos visit the Lions at 5 this afternoon on CKPG (channel 2, cable 3) and CKPG Radio (55). The Roughriders visit the Rough Riders at 1 p.m. Sunday on ITV (cable 2). Unfortunately for T.C. and the Tiger-Cats, the Argonauts refused to stay down in the second half Frriday night in Canadian Football* League action. Led by quarterback Gilbert Ren-froe, Toronto reeled off a string of 21 consecutive points and then scored the winning touchdown with no time remaining to defeat the defending Grey Cup champions 30-27. Renfroe marched the Argos 68 yards in nine plays, capping the 82-second drive with a three-yard touchdown toss to fullback Tony Johns. “We let them off the hook,” mourned Hamilton coach Al Bruno, whose club led 24-2 in the second quarter. The win raised Toronto’s record to 1-2-1 while Hamilton’s record slipped to 1-3. “That was really satisfying, especially against Hamilton,” Toron- to said coach Bob O’Billovich, whose club lost 59-56 to the Tiger-Cats in the playoffs last year. The turning point came late in that first half when Renfroe hit Darrell Smith for back-to-back passes of 30 and 41 yards to set the stage for Kevin Cummings’s one-yard TD dive. That cut the deficit to 24-12 at the half. Renfroe made it 24-19 3:07 into the third quarter when he hit Ken Joiner for a 35-yard touchdown pass. The Argo defence held Hamilton to a field goal the rest of the way, the Argo kickers accounted for four more points and Toronto walked away with the win after Johns hauled in Renfroe’s final throw. The Tiger-Cats led 24-2 early in the second quarter, taking advantage of a lacklustre showing by the Argonauts by shutting down the Toronto offence and shredding its defence. Toronto kicker Lance Chomyc booted three converts, a pair of singles and field goals from 24 and 42 yards. Hank Ilesic added a single. Afleet owner happy with Plate chances TORONTO (CP) - With the Queen’s Plate two days away, trainer Phil England is as confident in Afleet’s chances as the oddsmaker who listed him as the 4-5 favorite. Afleet, a three-year-old colt by Mr. Prospector who is owned by Rick Kennedy of Toronto, will be ridden in the $340,365 Plate on Sunday by Gary Stahlbaum. They will be accompanied in the race by sta-blemate One From Heaven, a classy filly who will be ridden by Bill Shoemaker. England, a 43-year-old Briton, is confident Afleet will come home with the $204,219 first-place prize. In fact, he wouldn’t be at all surprised if his filly took the second money of $68,073 as well. “He’s got that big class edge and in this race, at the distance (l'/« miles), class should tell,” said England of the colt which has won four of five lifetime starts. “My only concern is whether the horse will run his race. But overall, he’s the best horse. Nobody can compare to him. Yes, we’re very confident.” England is just about as enthusiastic about One From Heaven, a winner of seven of nine lifetime — including the $204,110 Canadian Oaks in her last race June 28. The Plate will be the eighth race of the day. The Queen’s Plate is scheduled as part of CBC’s Sportsweekend magazine show, which begins Sunday at 1:30 p.m. on CKPG (channel 2, cable 3).
