Britain's top-ranked player GOOSE CHEWY Luck variable when hunting I believe in luck. Good luck and bad luck. Oh sure, there’s skill in any outdoor sport and, God knows, you can’t ever count on luck, but still .... Take the first Charlotte goose I shot. Geese are no cinch to hunt. They are wise in the extreme and naturally suspicions of our breed. They will avoid fields where even one spent shell is visible, and you must always remove the dirt left from digging a pit. Geese can take care of themselves and this is a very good thing for geese, and for goose hunters. You can. normally get downright chesty about a bagged goose. Normally. The place I was hunting was the long, narrow estuary of a river I pretty much haunted. Geese were sitting in the centre of the estuary, perfectly safe. The man I was hunting with wanted to try a sneak on them so I said, “lots of luck” and paddled my canoe to the outside edge of the estuary, hoping to get -a shot at the geese after he spooked them. Sneaking on geese is like knocking out Mike Tyson — it can obviously be done, but not by such as us. I hunkered down in a makeshift* blind of driftwood. Some teal whistled by so I removed the goose loads from my old double and replaced them with low base 5’s. No more ducks came by but a half hour later the geese began honking — “Hey, look at the dude with the gun” — and took off. Another sneak had failed. They flew straight down the estuary’s middle and would obviously not come within 100 metres of me. Still, I dropped out the duck loads and replaced them with 2’s (standard medicine for geese.) The flock turned. For no apparent reason, they swerved and actually dropped down a bit. They flew straight toward my blind, their heads craning and quite obviously seeing me. They passed directly overhead — 50 of them and no more than 40 metres up. I picked a young bird from the rear of the group and swung the gun from behind the goose, pulled the trigger as the muzzle Outdoor life Ron Nelson passed the head. It was a fine shot. The goose came down like a stone. 1 clean forgot that I had another barrel and plenty of time to take another bird. One goose is the normal extent of my wildest dreams. Now, this is largely a story of skillfuL hunting, right? Wrong. You see, I had forgotten to pull the camouflage hood over my vividly bright toque. Nine hundred and 99 times out of a thousand, any geese seeing that toque would vacate the premises,' avoid the obvious dan-: ger. This day, those geese were curious. That can be the only reason they flew toward me. Lucky me. And the goose was not hit by a load of 2’s. No. When I changed shells, I somehow grabbed a pair of trap loads left over from a recent grouse hunt. The tiny pellets actually bounced off the goose’s wings. Only one pellet had struck the bird’s eye and that one pellet finished him. He was stupendously unlucky. But there’s more. This particular goose — flying at the flock’s rear where, everyone knows, the youngest and tender-est birds fly — was no youngster. I think he was older than me. At the epic company dinner that occurred after the required week of hanging, the carving fork just barely penetrated the leathery flesh. “Dense texture,” one guest said and then we all chewed and chewed and chewed. You win some, you lose some. Hon Nelson is an outdoors enthusiast based on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Judo berths sought s Six Prince George Judo Club members striving for spots on provincial teams are in Richmond this weekend for a major tournament.
