Woodpecker church restored Church bells will ring Sunday for the first time in more than 30 years in St. Mark’s Anglican Church at Woodpecker. The little church, located about 50 kilometers south of Prince George along Highway 97, was established in 1939. It offered regular services until the 1950s and then sat empty and idle until now. For the past year or so, volunteer work by a group of 10 Woodpecker area residents has restored the building to its original condition. It’s been re-roofed with cedar shingles, foundation timbers have been replaced, 106 tinted glass window panes have been refitted and the church bell has been replaced. The 14 wooden pews, accommodating about 100 r persons, are still in place and the original pump ; organ, which has been still for so long, will again produce music. A small cemetery beside the church contains two graves of pioneer residents, but it’s not known at this time if the cemetery will continue to be used. As it’s been from the beginning, the church has no electricity. After dark, services must be held in the glow of coal oil lamps and candles. Funds for the project came from community events and a government heritage grant totalling $5,262. Sunday’s service of thanksgiving at 3 p.m. will be conducted by John Snowden, Bishop of the Cariboo Anglican Diocese and Archdeacon David Ellis, guest minister from St. Miehael’s and All Angels Anglican Church in Prince George. The public is invited to join the congregation at the service and for refreshments after at the Hixon fire-hall. Unfortunately, it came too late for me, but it will surely help others. Please print it. Thousands of women will bless you. — Shell-Shocked in Schenectady Dear Shell: Thanks for your generosity, and good luck to you, dear. Preparing for Divorce The following checklist, devised with the help of lawyers, financial planners and family counselors, can ease, the transition to single life. While you and your partner are just thinking about divorce: Start putting away savings in an account of your own. This will give you ready cash in case your spouse suddenly stops contributing to household bills. If you do not have credit in your own name, get it. Apply for credit cards, and if necessary, have someone other than your spouse co-sign a small bank loan. Make an inventory of all separately and jointly held assets, including investments, cars and furniture. This tally, along with a list of outstanding debts, may be necessary to determine a division of property. Have your bank verify a list of the contents of any joint safe-deposit box. WsTOCK! "OLYMPIC SPECIAL” 1989 Model Hyundai Excels) Here Nowl Ann Landers Once you have decided to get a divorce: Notify banks and brokerages where you and your spouse have joint accounts of your intent to divorce. Ask that no brokerage transactions be carried out without the written approval of both you and your spouse. Close out joint charge accounts, or, if you wish to keep the accounts open, notify the creditors in writing that you will no longer be responsible for your spouse’s purchases. Try to negotiate an agreement with your spouse on the division of assets, child support and visitation rights. If you want child support or alimony, list your monthly and yearly expenses so your lawyer can make a case. Collect the names of experienced divorce lawyers from friends, the state or county bar association or other attorneys. Interview at least two candidates. Question them about their fees. After the divorce decree becomes final: Rewrite your will to name an heir other than your spouse. Review health, life and disability insurance coverage. Change the beneficiaries on policies you own unless your settlement requires you to continue to protect your ex. Replace any protection you have lost. Dear Ann Landers: I’d get a big kick out of it if you’d publish my response to “A Texas Question,” the reader whose son asked why women are so dumb. As the story goes, there was a n.*'i sitting in his room. He began to talk to God. The man said, ‘‘God, why did you make women so beautiful?” God replied, “Well, so you would like them.” “Oh,” the man replied, “why then did you make women so soft?” Again, God replied, “So you would like them.” The man was pensive for a moment and then asked, “God, why then did you make women so darned stupid?” God replied, “So they would like you!” — No Dummy in Philly Dear No Dummy: I’m printing your small joke to make up for all the male chauvinist comments that have appeared in this space over the years. 2344 WMtwood Dr. • DLN7200 Sales 564-6663 - Ssrvlc* 563-9946 We Sell Cars That Make Sense!.
