    The field for the world championship Snowgolf tournament Sunday is expected to be down from last year’s, although the traditional good time will likely be had by all who enter.
    Spokesman Al Buxton said Thursday he’s expecting 18 four-member teams, which would be down seven from last year.
    “A lot of people weren’t planning to do much because of the cold,” explained Buxton.
    However, weekend temperatures are expected to rise as high as -8C during the day — although it could still get as cold as -20 at night.
    The start time is 11 a.m. Snowgolf is being held at the Pum-phouse Pub for the third straight year.
                                                                                                          Peewee Kings 7-7
    The Viking Construction Peewee Kings were beaten 8-6 by the Dairy Queen Jets of Sherwood Park, Alta., at an eight-team minor hockey tournament in Vernon.
    Earlier, the Peewee Kings edged North Delta 5-4. Derek Wood and Shane Tidsbury each scored twice for Viking and Corey Scully had the other goal.
    Viking concludes its portion of a four-team round-robin pool by playing the Winnipeg Warriors at 5 today.
    The top two teams in each pool advance to semi-finals against teams from the other division.
                                                                                                             Firefighters set
    When John Campbell, Gerry Richard, Dave Seymour and Wayne Adams aren’t putting out fires, you might find them at the curling rink.
    Beginning Monday, all four will be skipping teams at the 31st annual firefighters curling championship in Prince George.
     Fifty-one rinks are scheduled to play in the four-day bonspiel, beginning at7 a.m. Monday at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club.
     Blake King, a member of the Prince George fire department and a competitor in this year’s tournament, says curling and firefighting go together.
     There are a few firefighters who are top notch curlers in Canada, said King.
     Richard, the 1988 B.C. firefighter champion, will be returning to defend his title.
     The winner of the B.C. playoff
  travels to St. John, N.B. in April for the Canadian firefighter championship.
    This year there are nine Prince George rinks scheduled to play in the B.C. playdown.
    Aside from Seymour’s rink, teams skipped by Jeff Rowland, Dave Thomas, and Kris Magnus-sen will be competing.
    The final draw is expected for Thursday afternoon.
                                                                                                        Umpires meeting
    Local baseball on-field officials are gathering Monday for a meeting that will likely be the basis for a long-standing organization.
    The fledgling Prince George Baseball Umpires’ Association is meeting at 7 p.m. in room four at the Civic Centre to state its objectives. The formation of the group would be the third in the province, after Vancouver and Kamloops, says Ross McQueen, one of the six local umpires behind the project.
    The others are Cecil Klyne, Mike Hodson, Don McNamara, Ron Thiel and Angelo Nadalin.
    Raising the level of umpiring is “really the main reason” for the group, McQueen explained. “I’ve spoken to all the presidents of all the leagues.
    ‘‘They’re awful enthusiastic about it.”
    McQueen said ayone who’s interested is welcome. The umpires particularly want to see representatives from local baseball leagues.
    “We’re definitely open to suggestions,” McQueen concluded.
                                                                                                           Wrestlers set
    The North Central zone high school wrestling championships start Saturday morning at Kelly Road Secondary School, with most zone coaches conceding the title to the host team.
    But Don Roy, coach of the Kelly Road squad, isn’t taking the defending zone champions from Nechako Valley Secondary School in Vanderhoof lightly.
    “I guess I’ll have to take their word for it,” Roy joked Thursday. “Actually, it could be pretty close.
    “We’ve got eight wrestlers who should win their weight classes, but Vanderhoofs got four guys who could win, and if they get a
  bunch of second-place and third-place finishes, they could sneak in.”
    Vanderhoof dethroned Kelly Road last year, but Nechako Valley coach Monte Olson said his team is in the midst of a rebuilding year.
    “We won last year, but a bunch of our guys graduated and their guys didn’t,” he said. “Their building year was last year, ours is this year.”
    Wrestlers will be trying to qualify for the provincial championship Feb. 23 to 25 at Killamey Secondary School in Vancouver.
    Weigh-in begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, with competition at 10. Roy said about 100 wrestlers are expected, with Fort St. John, Williams Lake and Vanderhoof providing the bulk of the visitors.

    STOCKHOLM (AP) - A smiling Bjorn Borg is reported to have kissed his fiancee, showed off his engagement ring and scoffed at the idea that he tried to commit suicide earlier this week.
    “It’s just ridiculous gossip,” the former tennis ace told the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. “Speculations that are quite incredible.” He was interviewed with his Italian fiancee, rock singer Loredana Berte, at his parents’ house at Cap Ferrat on the French Riviera.
    The couple travelled to France after Borg had his stomach pumped Tuesday at a Rome hospital.
    In his first detailed public statement here on the incident, the fivetime Wimbledon champion confirmed earlier reports that he had combined sleeping pills and whisky after eating food that was apparently spoiled.
    Italian media reported the incident as an apparent suicide attempt.
