Slight chance m Batman violence 'too much' Avery August protests in front of a Vancouver movie theatre. VANCOUVER (CP) - A Vancouver woman is trying to get tougher viewing restrictions put on the movie Batman because she says its cruelty and violence are unsuitable for young children. The artist has been picketing in front of a Vancouver theatre showing the movie with a placard that warns children to avoid the popular film. “The parents figure they’re sending their children to a kids’ movie, but this is deliberate cruelty and viciousness,” Avery August said. August wants a stricter warning or age restriction for the film — now rated mature — with the warning of some violence, occasional coarse language and swearing. Mary-Louise McCausland, British Columbia’s director of film classification,, said this was the first complaint she had recieved for the film, which has been playing for a month in Vancouver. “I could perhaps put a warning, ‘Not suitable for young children,”’ McCausland said. “I don’t think it’s suitable for young children, to be honest.” McCausland said she wouldn’t want to bar children from the film, but she warned parents not to confuse it with the cartoon-style TV series. (CP) — Four people, including three Vancouver-area men, were killed in a head-on car crash 10 kilometres south of here, authorities said Monday. One of the dead was identified as Jasbir Toor, 23, of Surrey, B.C. He died of head and abdominal injuries after being flown by helicopter to Modesto, 65 kilometres away, said a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. Two Vancouver residents, Har-jeet Brar, 22, and Jasbir Chahal, 22, died at the scene, said Joseph Sabo, Meced County coronor. A sports car carrying the three men was southbound on two-lane Highway 165 on Sunday when it pulled out to pass and collided with a northbound car driven by Alena Stanley, 77, of Dos Palos, Calif., said Tom Sawyer, a highways patrol public affairs officer. The 1965 Mustang was travelling at a “high rate of speed,” he said in an interview from Merced, Calif. A truck pulling two trailers, driven by Juan Garcia, 24, of Livingston, Calif., then struck the wreckage but was not a factor in the deaths, said Sawyer. Garcia was not injured. Both cars were demolished in the crash, which occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. PDT. Witnesses told police they had seen the Mustang speeding, running a stop sign and passing unsafely prior to the accident, Sawyer said. Stanley and two of the B.C. men were pronounced dead at the scene while the other man was flown by helicopter to hospital in Modesto, Calif. “It’s believed alcohol was also involved in this accident,” said Sawyer. Empty and partly empty beer cans were found in the men’s car but results of a toxicology report won’t be known for about 10 days.
