Grade Pre-employment Kirk Rayncr Board of School Trustees School District No. 57 (Prince George) AN OPEN LETTER TO THE VOTERS IN SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 57 On May 5, 1990, we will ask you to approve $2.3 million in local funding for our schools. We need this money to reduce the size of classes that our children attend. Our class sizes are among the largest in the province. In fact, in 1988, our average class size ranked 74th out of 75 districts in B.C. As a result, we began a program, in 1988, to fund a reduction in class sizes. Our efforts in 1988 and 1989 have seen our relative position improve to 53rd out of 75 districts. Here in the North, we cannot afford to have our class sizes ranked near the bottom. There are already enough obstacles that our students have to overcome to proceed to post-secondary education. We should be, and we are, striving for a system that gives our students the best possible learning environment. Accordingly, we have allocated $3.4 million in this year’s budget to continue our class size reduction initiatives. Through the block funding process, the government was willing to provide only $1.1 million of this amount, leaving $2.3 million to be raised through referendum. This initiative will cost the average home owner in our school district just $79 per year, or $6.58 per month. If you have children in school now, or even if you don’t but feel that investing in education is critically important to all of us, we urge you to approve the funding requested in the referendum. Yours truly, THE BOARD OF SCHOOL TRUSTEES School District No. 57 (Prince George) REFERENDUM BALLOT The Board of School Trustees of School District No. 57 (PrinceGeorge) seeks approval to raise funds in the 1990 calendar year through loca I residential taxation for expenditures in the next school year in addition to those provided for by the Provincial block funding allocation to this school district.
