Keeping the Games in touch task of communications group Perhaps it’s because PA systems, telephones and pagers have become commonplace in our lives that they are taken for granted by most of us. Not so for the members of the Communications Directorate which, although small in size, has an important role to play in the Summer Games. Comprised in large part of employees of the B.C. Telephone Company, the Communications Directorate is responsible for ensuring fast and efficient communications between the various components of the Games, including venue sites, the track, the accommodation sites and the Summer Games office. Commencing shortly after the closing ceremony at the Sunrey Summer Games, director Wayne Collins began recruiting volunteers to staff the various sub-committees under his leadership. With the framework in place and all the tasks assigned, regular biweekly meetings were held to discuss the progress made or to rectify any problems that may have arisen. With the Games less than two months away and the pace of work accelerating, these meetings are now held weekly. Hundreds of hours have been BY MARGARET MEERS BCJGAMES or will be spent installing both interior or exterior cables and lines for the 125 telephone sets, 60 coin phones, special-needs phones and a 200-line switchboard. Much of the installation work to be done in the schools must wait for the end of the school year in late June. In order to ensure continued good service to its other customers during this extremely busy time frame, B.C. Tel staff from Dawson Creek, Fort St. John, Williams Lake and Terrace will back-fill positions temporarily left vacant by those working to install equipment in the schools. Thousands of dollars worth of equipment has been donated by companies such as BTE, B.C. Cellular and Portable Communications, a division of B.C. Telephone enabling this directorate to operate wilh a very small budget. A communications centre will be set up and staffed by five volunteers at Carney Hill elementary school, from which all the equipment received will be sorted, catalogued and packaged for delivery to other directorates, sporting venues and accommodation sites. Operating instructions and, il necessary, help with setup will also be provided by this centre. Commencing July 3, the Communications Directorate with 40 additional volunteers will take over the responsibility for manning the switchboard and pagei desk from the Summer Games office staff, extending the hours of operation from 8 ajn. to 9 p.m. Between July 11 and 16, 24-hour communication coverage will be offered by the office. A telephone directory has been designed and printed to help direct the thousands of calls received at both the CNC and Summer Games switchboards as well as to provide fast linkage between all volunteers. To ensure a cohesive and efficient operation, volunteers, of which the directorate has its quota, have been involved in both telephone etiquette and teat building workshops over the past several months. Wayne believes his directorate will meet the challenge of providing effective communications for Prince George’s Summer Games and gives most of the credit to those under his leadership. “My job has been made much easier by the enthusiasm and dedication of all our volunteers,’’ hwe said. “They are a tremendous group.’’ Lines checked by helicopters Helicopters hovering over residential areas in Prince George aren’t being used to spy on citizens but rather to get a close look at B.C. Hydro lines. Helicopters, flying just above the wood pole lines, are being used to inspect 60,000-volt lines around the city to detect any damage to conductors or insulators, said Jim Rousell, B.C. Hydro transmission supervisor. Rousell said aerial inspections make hydro employees jobs easier as the only alternative would be to use a bucket truck or climb to inspect each structure. Inspections in the Bowl area should be completed by Wednesday, with the crew then moving on to inspect the line towards Hixon and then to Vanderhoof, he said. While inspections are scheduled to be done every two years, Roussel said “it’s been a couple of years” since it was last done and crews are finding “quite a few” problems which are then scheduled into regular maintenance repairs.
