TOM GOODWIN General Manager Suffice it to say, cedar is probably one of the few species of wood that seem to have been created for adverse conditions, the beauty of Western Red Cedar for feature walls and ceilings is an added bonus. Just read what the Canadian Lumber Grading Manual says about it The wood of Western red cedar varies in colour from a light straw shade to a dark brown redish-brown, with a narrow band of almost pure white sapwood. The grain ranges from very coarse to extremely fine, in the latter case it often cannot be distinguished by the naked eye. The wood is usually straight-grained and splits so readily that it has been used for generations to furnish the split "shakes* used by the'Indians and early white settlers of the Northwest It is among the lightest in weight of the commercial softwoods, is soft in texture and not as strong as fir and hemlock; but it has a wide range of desirable qualities which give it a field of service in which it surpasses other softwoods. No other softwood is superior to it in durability under the most unfavourable circumstances, it has a very low shrinkage factor and does not warp, twist or check; its thin cell walls and uniform structure give it superior insulating value; it is very easily worked and takes and holds nails without splitting; it finishes to a smooth, silky surface with a very pleasing performance; it takes paint, stain or enamel better than most woods and has superior gluing properties. Western red cedar is unsurpassed for outside uses. How about maintenance? Cedar by itself is maintenance free: what requires up keep is the insufficient finishes we add to the wood. Keep in mind the real enemy of Cedar is ultra violet light -not water, with the correct finish your siding, fencing, decking, etc. will have an extremely low maintenance factor. Come in and we will show you a fantastic selection of beautiful wood and the correct products to keep it looking that way. o» • Where can I shop for accessories for At Interior Offroad, Northern B.C.’s largest light truck parts and accessory store and it’s right here in Prince George.
