The Prince George Citizen - Wednesday, September 26,1990 - 15 Drug rules focus of Fuhr case TORONTO (CP) — The National Hockey League’s antidrug policy is back in the limelight today as Edmonton goalie Grant Fuhr faces a disciplinary hearing for substance abuse. Acting on the advice of his lay-wer in an August interview with the Edmonton Journal, Fuhr declined to answer questions about cocaine, but admitted he had abused a “substance” since approximately 1983 or 1984. The Journal quoted several sources, including Fuhr’s ex-wife, Corrinc, as saying the 28-year-old netminder used cocaine. Fuhr did say he had failed a private drug test and spent two weeks in a Florida treatment centre in August 1989. He also said he has not used the illegal substance since then. Once Fuhr made his admission, the NHL suspended him but allowed Fuhr, one of the NHL’s premiere goalies of the 1980s, to take part in all pre-season practices. Fuhr, who could face a lifetime ban from the NHL, is to appear before league prsident John Ziegler at 1:30 p.m. at a downtown hotel. Ziegler declined to say who else will be at the hearing but it’s believed that NHL vice-president Gilbert Stein, the league’s top lawyer, will flank the president. Fuhr’s lawyer will be present along with Oilers general manager Glen Sather. Also attending will be Alan Eaglcson, executive director of the NHL Players’ Association, and his deputy director, Bob Goodcnow. Ziegler and Sather said Tuesday they will have no comment on the hearing, and it is not known when a decision will be rendered. Sather has admitted he had heard rumors of Fuhr’s substance abuse for years but was unable to confirm them. The NHL has a simple drug policy: if a player uses or gets caught with drugs, he is suspended. The league has suspended four players for drug abuse. If Ziegler follows precedent, Fuhr may be handed a 10-game suspension. Borje Salming admitted in 1986 to using cocaine six or seven years before that. The league responded with a year suspension but later slashed it to eight regular season games and four exhibition games. Salming was fined S500, the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement. New York Rangers forward Don Murdoch was found in possession of cocaine at Pearson International Airport in 1978 and was barred a year by Ziegler, who later halved the suspension to 40 games. In 1983, Rick Nattress, a dcfcnccman with the St. Louis Blues, was originally suspended for a season after being found with a small amount of hashish while with the Montreal Canadicns. Ziegler reduced the sentence to 30 games, The most severe punishment was given to Detroit’s Bob Probert, who was expelled by the league after being arrested by U.S. officials for cocaine possession on March 2, 1989. He served a prison sentence and spent time in a halfway house, then was reinstated on March 4, 1990. 86ers meet Bays BURNABY, B.C. CABAT’S 198 George St 564-3235 PIRATES CLOSER Drabek’sbat helps by Canadian Press Though Doug Drabek’s teammates have nicknamed their 21-gamc winner Cybck — as in Cy Young Award winner — they owe some homage to his bat. The Pittsburgh Pirates moved one step closer to winning the National League East because Drabck (21-6) pitched a four-hitter and had two hits while scoring twice to beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3. "When he came over here from the Yankees in 1986, he couldn’t hit a foul ball,” Pirates manager Jim Lcyland said. “But he’s worked hard on his hitting, and now you don’t have to pull him out of a tight game in the fifth or the seventh for a pinch-hittcr. He’s helped himself win four or five games that way.” The win reduced Pittsburgh’s magic number to six. Any combination of Pittsburgh wins and New York Mets losses totalling six gives the Pirates the NL East. The Mets kept pace Tuesday — at three games back — by beating Montreal 3-1. In other games, it was: the Atlanta Braves 10, Cincinnati Reds 0; Sl Louis Cardinals 1, Philadcphia Phillies 0; Los Angeles Dodgers 3, Houston Astros 1; and San Francisco Giants 3, San Diego Padres 1. Drabek started the Pirates’ rally with a fifth-inning double off Steve Wilson (4-9) as the Pirates won for the fifth time in six games. Drabek, who is hitting .212, didn’t figure to be around that late after his shaky start Mets 3 Expos 1 Pinch-hittcr Dave Magadan’s two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning kept New York three games behind Pittsburgh and sent Montreal to its fifth straight loss. Chris Nabholz (6-1), who beat the Mets with a one-hitter last week, got his first major-leaguc loss. OILERS EDGE FLAMES Finn lifts North Stars by Canadian Press Jarmo Myllys, a 25-ycar-old former goalie wilh the Finnish national team, anchored the Minnesota North Stars to a 5-1 NHL exhibition win Tuesday night over the Winnipeg Jets. Myllys stopped 31 shots, holding off a Winnipeg barrage late in the game. Basil McRae, Tom Draper, Dave Gagncr, Mike Mod-ano and Brian Propp scored for the Stars. “Jarmo has been a bit of a surprise,” said North Stars coach Bob Gainey. “I had never seen him play before (this season). Tonight was his first complete game in the net and he was our strongest, or close to our strongest, player in the game.” Former Buffalo Sabre defen-ceman Phil Housley, acquired by Winnipeg in a June trade for centre Dale Hawerchuk, was the only Jet to beat Myllys. In other NHL exhibition games, it was: Edmonton Oilers 4, Calgary Flames 3; Philadelphia Flyers 2, New York Rangers 1; St. Louis Blues 5, Detroit Red Wings 3; and Chicago 3, Buffalo 0. Last season, Myllys was 31-9-3 with the Kalamozoo Kings of the International Hockey League and went 4-0 in the playoffs to become the team’s MVP. He led the Finnish team to the silver medal in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. Oilers 4 Flames 3 Joe Murphy, Craig Simpson, Glenn Anderson and Vladimir Ruzicka scored as Edmonton lifted its preseason record to 7-2-0. Stcphane Matteau, Brian MacLcl-lan and Paul Ranheim scored Calgary (5-2-1). Flyers 2 Rangers 1 Craig Berube deflected Gord Murphy’s point shot past John Vanbiesbrouck with 1:22 left in regulation. Pat Murray also scored for Philadelphia. Kris King scored for New York (3-2-3). Blues 5 Red Wings 3 In London, Ont., Keith Osborne scored goals 2:08 apart in the third period to lead SL Louis. Sergio Momcsso, Steve Tuttle and Michel Mongeau also scored for the Blues. Marc Habschcid, Bill McDougall, and Joey Kocur replied for Detroit. Blackhawks 3 Sabres 0 In Phoenix, Warren Rychel, Brian Noonan and Troy Murray each scored with Jim Waite and Jacques Cloutier in goal. LONDON (AP) — George Foreman says he’s in no hurry for his chance to regain the heavyweight title. “I’m not going away; I’m not going to leave until I am heavyweight champion of the world again,” he said Tuesday after knocking out Terry Anderson in the first round for the 24th straight victory of his comeback. “Even in my 40s I have got all the time in the world. I can afford to bide my lime.” Foreman, 42, wasted little time disposing of Anderson, who entered the fight wilh a 19-3 record. The former champion, who weighed in at 259 pounds, hit Anderson with a left jab, then clubbed him with a right with six seconds left in the first round. Anderson stayed on the canvas for about a minute, then got up to hug Foreman. The knockout in the scheduled 10-rounder at the London Arena was Foreman’s 65th and improved his record to 69-2 overall. He has won all 24 of his fights since beginning his comeback three years ago. Foreman said he hopes to challenge the winner of next month’s world title fight betwen champion James (Buster) Douglas and Evander Holyficld. He came into the fight six pounds lighter than expected, but said he’s hitting harder than ever. “I thought it would go a couple of rounds, but as I jabbed him he walked straight into my right hand,” Foreman said. “Il was one of the strongest punches I have ever thrown. “My power is back. I thought 1 had lost it to Muhammad Ali and now I feel as strong as I did as a teenager,” said Foreman, who lost his title to Ali in Kinshasa, Zaire, in 1974. Anderson, a 30-year-old Floridian, attacked Foreman’s midscction with little effect. Some of the estimated 4,000 British fight fans laughed in derision when Anderson tried to wrap his hands around Foreman, who outweighed him by 22 pounds. Lemieux’s ba acts up PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mario Lcmieux has left the Pittsburgh Penguins’ exhibition road trip to seek treatment for back pain. Lcmieux is in so much pain he can’t bend over to lie his shoes, but Penguins general manager Craig Patrick said the problem is not believed to be career-threatening. Lcmieux, the NHL’s two-time scoring champion, is almost certain to miss the Ocl 5 season opener against Washington and Patrick said it “very well may be” he won’t play for weeks. “The first thing on our minds is to get him healthy,” all-star dcfen-ceman Paul Coffey said. “Hockey aside, the most important thing for him is to get his back strong enough that he can do everyday things like putting on his socks. “He can’t even do that right now.” Lcmieux returned to Pittsburgh a few hours before the Penguins’ 4-1 exhibition loss Monday night to the Los Angeles Kings in Houslon. “We decided it was in his best interest to go back and sec the doctors because he wasn’t making any progress,” Patrick said. “And travelling around on planes and buses and (sleeping in) strange beds probably aren’t healthy for him, either.” Encouraged by his progress since undergoing surgery July 11 to remove part of a herniated disc, Lcmicux had planned to play by the season opener. Lcmieux’s optimism faded last week when he stopped skating because of back pain and a lung infection.
