When I visited the restaurant shortly before 5 on a Saturday afternoon, I was shown to a table immediately. When 1 left around 6:30, the lineup went all the way out into the street in a snowstorm. I ordered one of the specials, a combination of a seven-ounce sirloin steak and snow crab legs that cost $21.95. For an appetizer I ordered Mushrooms Neptune for $4.95, which was bordered by a tart creamy sauce lightly dusted by paprika. The entree included the salad bar. From among the vegetables and salads offered I picked one that was made up of spinach and mushrooms covered with a creamy sauce, and placed beside it a helping of the tossed salad that contained a liberal portion of purple cabbage. I added croutons and nuts, and put some broccoli at the side of the salad plate. The steak was properly cooked to medium as ordered, and the crab legs were tasty. Butter for dipping was kept melted in a small pan that had a candle underneath. The Keg had the Pacific Western beer I prefer, but also had an extensive wine and cocktail list. "We have such a huge bar we offer just about anything and everything,” said waiter Rick Poitras. The atmosphere by 6 p.m. was one of considerable conviviality, with a lot of talking back and forth between booths and even some joyful shouting. The most popular dishes are steak-and-seafood combinations, especially steak and lobster, Poitras said. An appetizer preferred by many patrons is lob-ster-and-shrimp gratinee. The clientele was predominantly of younger people, but middle-aged and older poeple could be seen at tables here and there. "There are lots of business people during the week,” Poitras said. “The business people are usually from out of town and — I imagine from dealing with them — mostly on expense accounts. "During the weekend, it’s 21 to 30, I’d say. We get quite a few older people, too.” Weekend patrons are mostly local. "Everybody’s out partying!” Poitras said. "We’re very fortunate to get a very wide spectrum,” added Manager Sal Gupta. Keg waiter Rob Scott pours wine for Karen LeBeau and Darren Wilson. The restaurant is popular with a wide spectrum of people. photo by Brock Gable SPEND AN EVENING DANCING Boogie the night away at Club 770, meet with friends, listen to great music, or relax with a drink from the bar. ©The Coast Inn oFtlre North Thu-Fri-Sat: 8pm-2am 770 Brunswick Street il 563-0121 ri The Pnifctsionitls n Rest value Eyewear Specialist GOODBYE BROKEN HINGES Question: Why are the hinges on eyeglass frames so fragile? Mine keep breaking. What’s the solution? Answer: Your .frustration of broken eyeglass hinges is over thanks to today’s spring hinges. They are designed to be remarkably flexible. No matter how often they are extended, the frame returns to the original adjustment. Once your eyewear professional adjusts the frame to your face, it will fit as snuggly the thousandth time it is worn as it did the first time. The new spring-hinged temples take a lot of punishment without altering the shape of the frame. This keeps your eyesight absolutely correct. Once the frame is adjusted to your face, it keeps its fit -- permanently (well, almost). Spring-hinged frames may cost a bit more, but they’re well worth it.
