The victory came on the heels of a four-run fourth inning rally for Al Seager. Trailing 3-0 after two Al Seager turned the tables. Pete Hogan, Al Groves and Cheyene Belcher led the offense for Al Seager. In the other game Wednesday, Val J. Holding edged Posteraro Trucking 4-3. Chris Coburn pitched the win for Val J. with Mike Williams and Wayne Nicholas leading the offense. The teams were tied 3-3 after two but Val J. earned the go-ahead run in the third to take the lead. Bill Cardinal took the loss for Posteraro. Homer critical Jackie Bayley’s two-run homer highlighted an eight-run fourth inning Wednesday as Fred Walls shutout Latimer Trucking 18-0 in Prince George women’s slo-pitch. In the other game Wednesday Sunland Motor Cars defeated Financial Planning Centre 12-7. Sunland scored six runs in the Fifth and six in the sixth for the win. Financial secured a brief 7-6 lead in the top of the sixth but couldn’t halt Sunland’s march. Lacrosse expanding? The fledgling Prince George Senior Men’s lacrosse league has expansion on its mind just weeks into its inaugral season. Glen Scott, league commissioner, announced today the league is exploring the possibility of a fourth-team to take the pressure off bloated rosters on the three existing teams. Scott said today the league is searching for a sponsor, coaches and managers for another team to join the league as soon as possible. Derby winner in good spot BALTIMORE (AP) — Kentucky Derby winner Strike the Gold drew the No. 3 post position Thursday when eight three-year-olds were entered for the Preakness Stakes. Strike the Gold was the early 9-5 favorite for Saturday’s second stop on U.S. thoroughbred’s Triple Crown circuit Strike the Gold beat Best Pal by 1 lengths in the Derby on May 4 at Churchill Downs. Mane Minister, an 86-1 outsider who finished third in the Derby for owners John Toffan of Vancouver and Truidy McCaffcry of Calgary, drew the No. 2 post for Saturday’s race and is listed at 12-1. Strike the Gold’s trainer, Nick Zito, said earlier in the morning he wanted the No. 1 post position. He did not attend the draw. The field, from the post out with odds, is Corporate Report, 15-1; Mane Minister, 12-1; Strike the Gold; Hansel, 9-2; Best Pal, 7-2; Honor Grades, 20-1; Olympio, 5-2, and Whadjathink, 30-1. Strike the Gold will start next to Hansel, as he did Derby day. by Timbermen Travis Poirier was the winning pitcher in a 10-6 decision for Western Seaboard Transport against College Heights Pub Wednesday in Spruce City Men’s Fastball Assocaition play. Poirier struck out three and walked three in Seaboard’s first win of the season. He allowed six runs on eight hits including three runs-batted-in by Bob Rawlings. Poirier also drove in two runs for the winners. In the other game Wednesday, C.C. Industries defeated Dakata’s 4-3. Gibby Chassc powered Seaboard’s offence hitting two-for-three with two runs and two RBIs. Other two RBI-efforts came from Ken Dalziel and Poirier. Chuck Praught and Glen Duboski shared pitching for College Heights striking out six and walking four. The winners led 4-0 after die first inning and never looked back. Dan Emewein pitched the win for C.C. Industries fanning three batters and walking four. The teams were locked in a 2-2 tie after two innings. The deadlock snapped in the fifth when C.C. Ramage went three-for-four with three runs-batted-in for Spruce-land. From the Rangers’ point of view, it was a frustrating game, according to Remax spokesman Ian Doak. “It was just one of those games.’’ said third baseman Doak. “They weren’t hitting the ball long, they were just hitting little bloopers, singles and stuff that were falling between us. “We also made unforced errors and they kept hitting bloop singles and moving their players around the bases. It was frustrating.” The first four Timbermen batters got base hits off losing pitcher Gord Fitzer. Al Patterson, who finished with two RBIs and scored four runs, singled his first trip to the plate. Dan Depalma doubled to left, Ramage and Rocky Johanson singled to give the Timberman two runs in the top of the first. Remax shortstop Quinn Campbell hit a double in his first at-bat and scored later on Fitzer’s single to right field. Patterson, Depalma, Ramage and Ken Yorsten scored in the second inning on a succession of singles combined with errors by Remax to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Grant Stubley drove in Colin Shearer in the bottom of the second for Remax’s second run. Stubley was ejected in the bottom of the fourth for arguing with an umpire as the frustration mounted. Patterson scored runs in the third and fourth inning and had two RBIs in the fourth. Winning pitcher Dan Ashcroft struck out nine YRB batters giving up only one run in the second inning to Chris Madsen who was batted home by a Kevin Paschal double. ■ The senior mens baseball and Babe Ruth league suspends regular season play this weekend for the Norgate Autobody Icebreaker tournament. The eight-team tournament includes three men’s and five Babe Ruth teams, including out-of-town Babe Ruth entrant Terrace. “I think they’re mostly a Babe Ruth team with a couple of 18-, 19-year-olds,” said league spokesman Garry Carrclli. “It will be a tough team.” Play begins Friday at Montey Gabriel Park with Babe Ruth teams CIC and Joe Martin and Sons meeting at 6:30. The men follow with Remax and Alpine Pub playing at 9. The other four teams, YRB and Ritchie Brothers play Saturday at 10 a.m. and Spruceland Inn and Terrace play at 12:30. Basketball Hall wants women Pop prepared for tournament Larry Ostenak went three-for-four with a triple Wednesday to help Video Pop defeat Teamsport 13-6 in Prince George men’s slo-pitch. Both teams will have a chance to meet again this weekend in the Fourth Annual men’s slo-pitch tournament at Kenworth Field. The 11-team tournament begins Friday at 6:30 with Fred Walls playing Western Staging. Video Pop’s Blain Black went three-for-three with a double. The victors clinched the win with a four-run sixth inning. Bob Robinson went two-for-three and belted a home run for Teamsport. Bob Parson went three-for-three for Teamsport. In other games Wednesday, it was: Blue Jays 8, Firefighters 4; and Reimer 13, Mr. G 12. Bruce Briere hit a home run and earned two runs-batted-in in three trips to the plate for the Blue Jays. (AP) — In a move that will virtually assure the induction of at least one female each year, the Basketball Hall of Fame has set up a special nominating committee for the women’s game. The Basketball Hall of Fame is the lone major-sports shrine to admit both men and women. Three women have already been inducted. Also enshrined are 176 men and four teams. Earlier, Bob Knight of Indiana University was one of seven men inducted into the Hall. Also entering this week were: Nate (Tiny) Archibald; Dave Cowens, who played most of his pro career with the Boston Celtics; and Harry Gallatin, who starred for the New York Knicks during the 1940s; the late Larry O’Brien, former NBA commissioner, Boris Stankovic, head of the International Basketball Federation, and the late Larry Fleisher, who founded the NBA players association.
