The language of mathematics is precise—you should not confuse probability with certainty. If the odds in favor of something happening are 4-to-l, it still means that, in 20 of a 100 cases, it will not occur.
Frankly, we do not like North’s •raise to two spades. Playing four- or five-card majors, we would respond with one-no-trump. Actually, North’s misbid worked well. South would have raised a one-no-trump response to game and, had East found a diamond lead, that contract would have gone the way of all flesh.
West started by cashing three high diamonds, East discarding a
club, then shifted to the deuce of hearts. Declarer won in hand, drew trumps in four rounds as West let go of two diamonds, and then was faced with the prospect qf finding a parking-place for the club loser. Obviously, the heart suit offered the only hope.
When South continued by cashing the king of hearts, East quite naturally followed with the ten. For those of us who have the benefit of looking at all four hands, the rest is easy. Play a heart to the ace and, when everyone follows, the 13th heart provides a discard for the club loser.
However, the percentages favor a 4-2 break of six missing cards over a 3-3 split. A further confirmation of the odds is that East is far more likely to have been dealt a doubleton 10 9 of hearts than specifically J 10 9. Then there was West’s shift to a low heart to be considered.
Taking all these factors into account, declarer adopted what we consider to be an entirely reasonable line. South led a heart and finessed the eight! It was just one of those days that went against the percentages. We have all experienced them!
