The Prince George Citizen, TV TIMES - July 20th, 1991 — 37 ON THE CABLE By KIRK NICEWONGER Lifetime gets original with several new series On July 23, Lifetime, one-third of which is owned by ABC, takes a cue from its broadcast-network parent: The cable service will launch a weekly, two-hour block of original programming. On Tuesdays from 8 to 10 p.m. Eastern, Lifetime will air three new series: "Veronica Clare,” "The Hidden Room” and "Confessions of Crime." (The shows will be repeated on Saturday nights, starting at 10 p.m. Eastern.) Cable has had a checkered record when it comes to this sort of thing: Eschewing the bland mediocrity of most broadcast series, cable’s attempts at original weekly programming have either sparkled (HBO’s "Tales From the Crypt") or appalled (USA’s "Counterstrike”). Still, there is a ring of the familiar about Lifetime's new series. Leading off Lifetime's Tuesday-night lineup will be "Veronica Clare.” Canadian actress Laura Robinson stars in the title role of the hour-long series, which revolves around a private investigator who is also a partner in a jazz club. (Did we hear "Peter Gunn’’?) She is secretive and enigmatic (did someone mention "Wiseguy”?), solving complex cases with psychological insight rather than bullets. (Who said "Columbo”?) The cast includes Christina Pickles of "St. Elsewhere”: guest stars are slated to include John Ireland, Dan Hedaya and Audra Lin-dley. Following “Veronica Clare” will be a half-hour anthology series, "The Hidden Room." Lifetime describes "The Hidden Room” as ‘'suspenseful tales of women struggling with their deepest fears, secrets and desires”: plots of the opening shows revolve around a woman who "adopts" a little boy in her dreams and a college student who copes with a lifetime of sexual abuse by her father by stealing mail from a campus post office. "The Hidden Room” has the most impressive credits of the three series: among those set to star are Amanda Plummer ("L.A. Law”), Lara Flynn Boyle (“Twin Peaks”) and Helen Slater ("Ruthless People”). Episodes will be based on works by such writers as Mona Simpson and Gail Godwin. Theresa Saldana, the actress who founded a victims'-rights or- BUCKLE UP! Seat belts save lives.
