PLUS!-Saturday. Oct. 26. 1991 - 19 A century of service Additional staff means faster service. Working in front of the dispensary, Helen Sarrazin (left) and Sherry Wicks attend to customers picking up prescriptions. Between them, Ken Reid, Bud Whitwham, Paul Antosz and Susan Smith offer a hundred years of experience. Being a pharmacist involves a lot more than putting medication in bottles. It begins with the person the prescription was written for - the customer. As Reid’s Prescriptions has been serving Prince George for almost thirty years, in some cases, they’re dealing with the third generation of customers. This is where caring comes in. A lot of Reid’s customers are also old friends and Ken, Bud and Paul share in family successes and tough times. It’s part of the way they do business. When Reid’s opened in 1962, the smaller population made it easier to know customers by name. Ken Reid puts it very well when he says, “When I first came here, said hello to everyone on the street because I knew them all!” As the population increased in the 1960s, it didn’t take long for things to change. Reid recalls running into the late Martin Caine (pioneer lumberman) at a Rotary function and asking him why he looked so grumpy. Caine replied, “It’s Prince George that’s the matter, there are too dam many strangers here now.” Suhven Bennett, a customer at George Reid’s drug store in Vancouver in the 1950s, discusses her prescription with George’s son Ken in the new consulting area. Mrs. Bennett took the opportunity to present Ken with a medicine spoon from the Vancouver store, dating back 40 years. Room to talk An extra feature incorporated during the recent renovation at Reid’s Prescriptions is the consulting room. It’s a secluded corner set aside for occasions when a pharmacist needs a little time and privacy to explain a new course of treatment, how a certain drug should be taken, or what a customer can expect from a certain combination of drugs. A careful explanation of a new medication can answer questions and provide important product information. It’s a matter of putting the customer’s mind at rest. The new consulting room is part of the ‘people approach’ to doing business at Reid’s Prescriptions. to 25 neid’s — prescriptions and staff for 29 years of excellent service to the community.
