Volkswagen vans are supposed to be noisy. Volkswagen vans are supposed to be gutless. Volkswagen vans are supposed to be decorated on the outside with poorly painted peace signs and hallucenogized flowers. Volkswagen vans are supposed to be decorated on the inside with up to one dozen international terrorists armed with AK-47s. But somebody broke the rules. The 1992 Eurovan fits none of the stereotypes. I can’t say how dramatic the changes are over previous models because the last time I drove a VW van was shortly after the earth cooled. That model was so gutless it would have had more power had they scratched the diesel engine and harnessed the van to a one-mule team. Enter the flashy, splashy Eurovan. On looks alone, it’s a winner, streamlined and contemporary. In fact, a cab driver even pulled up Volkswagen beside me in a parking lot just to ask about it. He thought it looked great, he said, and wanted a better look. Of course, whenever a cab comes near me, I just naturally assume he’s there to cut me off in traffic and then make obscene gestures, so I was surprised when this fellow was polite and friendly. If the population as a whole responds as enthusiastically about this van as he did, Volkswagen won’t be able to keep up with demand. After answering his many questions about the Eurovan, I held out my hand for my tip. He cut me off. The van’s traditional rear-mounted, four-cylinder air-cooled engine, sometimes referred to as four fat mice in an oval tread-wheel, is history. In it’s stead is the same engine used in some Audis, albeit with a different camshaft to give the Eurovan more low-end torque. Under the sloping front hood, which stays up without an annoying support bar, is a transverse-mounted five-cylinder 2.5-litre engine. It’s digifant fuel injection ad- van breaks the rules
