A flaming battle marked the end of Kitwanga Fort in the early 1800s. Cedar plank chiefs’ dwellings, surrounded by palisades once crowned the large rounded hill. The hill is now the principal feature of Kitwanga Fort National Historic Site. This fort, built near an important trade route by the Gitwangak (the people of the place of rabbits) had a sys- tem of logs designed to roll on approaching enemies. Its most famous and last defender was a fierce warrior named Nekt Mistaken for a mythical grizzly bear, Nekt wore a suit of armor made from a grizzly skin lined with tab-, lets of slate. Battles were waged to control fishing sites, protect trade routes and enhance the prestige of the clans. Kitwanga Fort marks the first major western Canadian native site commemorated by Parks Canada. Seven interpretive panels along a trail to the Ta’awdzep or battle hill, tell Nekt’s story and the history of the site. Located between New Ha-zelton and Terrace in northwestern British Columbia, Kitwanga Fort is near the junction of Highway 16 and Highway 37, a major route to the Yukon and Alaska. Totem poles which depict the Kitwanga Fort story are located nearby in Gitwangak, Kispiox and Kitwancool. Ksan, a reconstructed Gitk-san village is located in Ha-zelton.
