The Prince George Citizen - Friday, May 14,1993 - 15 Soccer B.C. teams stop here by GORDON HOEKSTRA Citizen Staff The Lower Mainland is coming up to look at the youth-socccr talent in town again. Well, not the whole Lower Mainland. The under-14 provincial soccer squad will play exhibition matches against all-star squads from the youth league in town Saturday and Sunday. Last year the under-14 provincial squad came to Prince George to play exhibition games and picked up two players — Terrol Russell and Surjit Sidhu — for an overseas trip to England. “What this docs it bring them up to have a look at our boys,” said Gale Russel, this year’s youth soccer president. “The kids get a chance to play, and they see what kind of talent we have up here.” The plan is lo keep bringing teams up each year and hopefully next year they can bring up a girls’ squad as well, said Russell. The program is part of an ongoing process to get the Lower Mainland to recognize the problems of the North, he said. “I just want them to get up here and see what talent we have,” said Russell. “We play on fields in May, not on snow.” In Prince George alone there are 1,600 youth soccer players on 122 teams. Any players that do make it on a provincial squad must travel to the Lower Mainland to train at their own expense. Terrol Russell, Sidhu and Pablo Ruiz, a goaltender for the under-18 B.C. squad, arc the only Prince George youth players to attempt it. When Lower Mainland teams travel to Prince George they get an idea of what it costs to travel. The teams coming up were shocked when they found out how much it costs to rent a bus, said Gale. It costs the Prince George youth league and the parents 526,000 to send 14 teams to Kelowna. ■ The Prince George youth-15 allstars play 9 a.m. Saturday at the old Rotary Stadium. The Prince George youth-16 all-stars play 7 p.m. Saturday, and a combined 15-lb youth all-star team plays Sunday at 9 a.m. GIRLS’SOCCER ZONE ’Runners advance Chasing it down Pacific Western Brewery Kickers' Graham Archer battles with Honda North’s Cylde Nilsen in North Cariboo senior soccer action Thursday night at the Old Rotary Stadium. In the early line for the 1 3-16-milc Prcakncss at Pimlico, the Kentucky Derby winner was listed Thursday as the 7-2 second choice. Prairie Bayou, the gelding who was second at Churchill Downs, was made the 3-1 favorite in the field of 12 three-year-olds for Saturday’s race. Trainer Mack Miller was not surprised that Sea Hero wasn’t made the favorite. “I thought I’d be second or third choice because it is a 16th of a mile shorter, and also the sharp turns,” he said. “This is much tougher (than the 11/4-mile Derby and the lVi-mile Belmont Stakes on June 5). “A mile and a quarter suited my horse, and a mile and a half, God willing, will suit him better.” The favorite’s role for Prairie Bayou didn’t impress trainer Tom Bohannan. PREAKNESS “1 think you can make any two, three different horses the favorite,” he said. Last year, Pine Bluff, trained by Bohannan for John Ed Anthony’s Loblolly Stable, finished fifth in the Derby, but was favored over Derby winner Lil E. Tee in the Prcakncss. Pine Bluff won. The third early choice at 9-2 was Personal Hope, the Santa Anita Derby winner who was first or second until midstretch before finishing fourth in the Kentucky Derby. Other Derby starters in the Preakness will be Wild Gale, third as a member of the mutuel field; Union City, 15th; Rockamundo, 17th, and El Bakan, 18th. Coverage begins at 2 p.m. Saturday on BCTV (channel 12, cable 11) and KOMO (cable 8).
