Marathon said it and Sun Hung Kqi Properties Ltd. have agreed on a joint venture to develop the 17-hectare site along the waterfront in th£ city’s west end. Financial details were not disclosed. -“I cannot discuss any of the details,” Marathon general manager Graeme Stamp said in an interview. He said Sun Hung Kai will participate in the development of the residential site that will include the construction of about 2,250 housing units. Marathon will concentrate on its traditional strength and remain fully involved in the construction of. the commercial portion of the project, Stamp said. TTie “market-driven” project could take up to 20 years to complete, depending on demand Ferry service to shut down •VANCOUVER (CP) — Royal Seal ink Express is permanently shutting down its harbor-to-harbor passenger ferry service between Vancouver and Victoria effective Sept. 30, Royal Sealink’s parent company announced Thursday. -“This has been a very difficult and disappointing decision for us and one which we very much re-grfct having to make,” Hans Jorgen Ronshaug, president of the Norwegian conglomerate Kvaemer Fjellstrand Shipping, said in a news release. .“‘Since we started the business in- February 1992, we have been working very hard to build our ridership. Despite these efforts, we have been carrying only half the passengers we need in order to make the operation viable.” for residential housing and commercial space, he said. In addition to the housing, the project is expected to included two marinas, a hotel and 140,000 square metres of office space. Mayor Gordon Campbell said the the announcement appears to be good news for the city. “If it allows them to get on with the creation of the housing in the neighborhood and the (waterfront) walkway, I think it’s great.” Shoreline work for the first phase of the project with about 1,000 residential units and a 300-berth recreational marina has already begun. Stamp said the first residents should be on the site in two years. Acting city manager Ted Droett-boom said Sun Hung Kai’s involvement should have no material impact on the complex planning process that began in 1989. “The plans and the zoning was put into place in such a manner that it is completely independent of who owns the land,” he said. Sun Hung Kai is a privately held company controlled by the Kwok brothers, one of Hong Kong’s wealthiest families. The company is said to be one of Hong Kong’s largest landholders with assets of SI3 billion and nearly $800 million in profit last year. Marathon is a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Ltd. Canadian Pacific’s extensive real estating holdings in Canada and the United States are worth more than S3.2 billion, Marathon said in a news release.
