VICTORIA (CP) — A deeply religious Christian couple said their prayers were answered Thursday when British Columbia’s highest court awarded them permanent custody of their adopted part-aboriginal child. But the boy’s natural mother, a 20-year-old Cree from Alberta who changed her mind about the adoption two days after giving up her son, said she was heartbroken by the ruling. “I really love my son and I wanted him to be with me,” said Teena Sawan. ‘‘I am angry. I love him very much and I miss him.” Sawan, a recovering drug and alcohol abuser who was sexually molested as a child, gave up the son she’d named Jordan in February 1992 to Jim and Faye Tearoe of Victoria. The boy had been bom two months earlier in Manning, Alta., following a brief relationship between Sawan and a non-native man. But two days after the private adoption, Sawan telephoned the Tearoes to say she had changed her mind. The Tearoes refused to give up the boy they had re-named after the Bible’s King David, provoking an emotional months-long court battle. The B.C. Court of Appeal ruled Thursday that the toddler, now 20 months old, should remain with the parents he knows best. “Common sense dictates that to disrupt the child from his present environment, and to put him through the uncertainty associated with an attempt to establish a bond with his natural mother, would cause him considerable trauma,” said the ruling by a three-judge panel. The 19-page decision overturned an earlier ruling by the B.C. Supreme Court, which had ordered the boy be returned to Sawan because “the connection between the mother and the child has not been irretrievably broken.” The appeal court disagreed. “There is no evidence from which to conclude that a bond between the mother and the child had ever been established,” the ruling said. “Indeed, the evidence establishes beyond doubt that the only mother and father this child knows are Faye and James Tearoe.” The Tearoes were ecstatic. “God’s hand was moved by our Sarajevo evacuation shy of cash OTTAWA (CP) — The Red Cross is appealing for public donations to help finance the evacuation of at least 20 wounded civilians from Sarajevo. The humanitarian agency is already short of funds to carry out its operations in the former Yugoslavia, and the evacuation is expected to be a major challenge, Red Cross officials told a news conference Thursday. They could not say when the first victims will arrive or how much the entire operation will cost, but the International Red Cross Society needs another SI00 million for its operations in Bosnia, said spokesman Rene de Grace. The Red Cross is spending $900,000 a month in Bosnia on medical assistance. Preference in the evacuation will be given to children but adults will not be excluded, said De Grace, director of international services for the evacuation which has been dubbed Project Helping Hand. Children are preferred because their plight has especially touched people’s hearts, De Grace told a news conference Thursday. “The children have nothing to do with the conflict, they are the most innocent,” he said. The Canadian operation is simi-' lar to others launched by some 17 countries, following a flood of publicity surrounding a young muslim girl named Irma Hadzimu-ratovic, who was eventually evacuated to Britain. The British operation was criticized for becoming a media circus in which children were exhibited insensitively but De Grace said the victims would be treated with the greatest dignity possible. He denied that Western nations have undertaken the evacuations to appease guilt for not having done more to stop the conflict. prayers,” said Jim Tearoe, a 47-year-old civil servant. “David is a happy, delightful, well-adjusted little child. His best interests are being served.” But Sawan said she had bonded with her son, adding she was considering an appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. “I carried him for nine months and after the birth there was a special bonding between us.” Under Alberta law, a natural parent may rescind an adoption decision within 10 days by giving written notice to the provincial government. Sawan said she wrote the letter. The Social Services Ministry says it never received it. Sawan said her son was taken away from her because of a technicality — something the Tearoes should have recognized. “I asked them for my son within the time period required,” she said. “They did not return him. I can’t say I show any sympathy for them.” Answering questions in a composed fashion, the soft-spoken high-school student said she was pressured to give up her son. “Doctors, social workers, people walking down the street — they all told me I was too young, that I should give him up to a two-parent home. I always felt pressured.” Sawan, now pregnant by her 24-year-old fiance, has said she has overcome her alcohol and drug use and hopes to become a lawyer or native counsellor.
