The title was Production, Shipments and Stocks on Hand of Sawmills East of the Rockies (excluding Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island). It was typical of Statistics Canada’s worthy but stodgy efforts to list everything that was listable about Canada and Canadians. And as far as Ivan Fellegi was concerned, it was one of those publications the agency could afford to put on the back burner. Since taking over the agency in 1985, Canada’s chief statistician has presided over its dramatic transformation from a dusty numbers cruncher into an aggressive huckster of information. In an average year, Statistics Ca- nada makes about S35-milliou from selling its figures, analyses and services. Over the next five years, it’s expected to bring in an extra S15 million just through publishing data from the 1991 census. It’s is not the only government agency where profit from selling information has become a driving force. In department after department, civil servants who never had to think about the market are now dreaming about its potential. But Statistics Canada is years ahead. In fact, it is so expert that other federal departments are looking to it as a model for their own efforts to sell information to private companies. ENROLL NOW!
