MORE THAN A TOUCH OF MAVERICK Unconventional by JAMIE PORTMAN Southam News BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — The roles couldn’t be in greater contrast — a carnal authoress in Woody Allen’s Manhattan Murder Mystery and a reprise as Morticia in Paramount’s upcoming Addams Family Values. But they reflect the kind of career Anjelica Huston chooses to pursue as an actress. She resists being categorized or forced into a pigeon-hole. So she’ll cheerfully accept roles which many of her more image-sensitive peers would reject — the Grand High Witch in The Witches or the larcenous mother in The Griftcrs — and end up collecting Best Actress awards for the resulting performances. But like her late father, director John Huston, there’s more than a touch of the maverick in her makeup. “I like to do different things and I like to keep myself amused,” she says matter-of-factly. “Finding a variety of roles is the most important thing to me. I’m more interested in that than screen time than billing. I don’t have an over-all plan. I basically respond to things I like.” And she very much likes playing Morticia, the creepily lovable matriarch of 199l’s The Addams Family and its sequel, Addams Family Values, opening Friday “The A.ddams family is a little like childbirth,” she says thoughtfully. “When you finish with one, you always think — gasp — no more. But then a period of time passes and you’re ready to go into another one with enthusiasm. “Besides, I like to play to a young audience. That’s definitely the most enthusiastic audience you can find. They sort of come with no judgments, and 1 always hope they respect me for the things I do in my old age.” The lady’s obviously joking. At 42, Angelica Huston is looking terrific. In fact, in her own bizarre way, she even looks pretty stunning as the pale, slant-eyed and voluptuous Morticia in Addams Family Values — although Huston emphasizes her makeup for the role is decidedly not one of the plus factors in doing an Addams film. “I wear a lot of clam-white on my face. My lips are extra red. I have lifts on my eyes which are always good for a headache by lunchtime.” In some ways, Huston’s Morticia poses more of a problem to a makeup artist than co-star Carol Kane, who is converted into an aging hag by means of a latex prosthetic. “A prosthetic can just go on and stay there all day,” Huston explains. “The thing about Morti-cia’s makeup is that it has to be human. We’re working with flesh not rubber, so it has to be perfect. That means constant upkeep. You have to keep the white on the face consistent. We can’t let the lipstick bleed.” Even so, she has a tender spot for Morticia and also loved her scenes with Raoul Julia, who plays her passionate husband Gomez. Furthermore, Huston says that although the Addamses arc unconventional and somewhat macabre in their tastes, they arc definitely not wicked. “Morticia’s really a benevolent character,” she emphasizes. “She’s the emotional base of the family. She’s very kind — all in all, she only wants the best for her family. “Mind you,” Huston adds with a smile, “if anything should stand in her way, her reaction is akin to that of a black widow spider. But all in all, I see her as kind and loving, very endearing, and a very good mother.” Morticia also has her own rigid moral code — which is why she’s horrified at the prospect of her two children, Wednesday and Pugg-slcy, doing something as conventional as attending summer camp. “After all, summer camp is a very disturbing place for children to be,” says Huston, assuming Morticia’s velvety vocal cadences. “This brings out her protective vein. She worries on her children’s behalf because she doesn’t want them disturbed by the normalcies of everyday life.” Addams Family Values is a big-budget mainstream movie which stands a good chance of grossing more than $100 million. But equally important to Huston is a movie like Manhattan Murder Mystery, the second project she’s done for Woody Allen. “I feel very lucky to have been a part of his movies. It’s very pleasurable to go in and make a smaller movie with a smaller crew, with a director who shoots unconventionally but knows exactly what he’s doing.” [ftUmitti B.C.
