TORONTO (CP) — World champion figure skater Kurt Browning is on the set at a local arena, filming a sexy number for his new CBC television special, Kurt Browning: You Must Remember This.
The sequence is being shot with skaters Kristi Yamaguchi, Christine Hough and Josee Chouinard to the pounding sounds of Robert Palmer’s Simply Irresistible.
The women make several costume changes, each one sexier than the last. Browning cavorts and flirts on camera and between takes, but later says it was a lot of work and a long day. The result is a slickly edited rock video style piece that reminds us how far figure skating has come.
One segment in the hour-long special, scheduled for Feb. 6, has Browning and his three guest stars acting out a romantic Humphrey Bogart-style murder mystery. It even includes a fight scene for which Browning was trained by a specialist.
Browning has used the Bogie character from the movie classic Casablanca in his long program for competition. It’s a character that projects strength* masculinity and humor. ( ^
“People ask me if the masculine image is on purpose, but it’s really not,’’ says Browning, 27. “If you get a good response from people then you keep that in mind. A lot of people said, ‘That looked good on you,’ so we worked on it and kept it.”
Still, the four-time world champion is hesitant to take credit for changing the style of male figure skating.
“I hate to come out and say I’ve brought something new to skating. It seems to put down the people that went before me, and if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be where I am. The girls may yell for me today but they did that for Brian Orser and Toller Cranston, too.”
Nonetheless, Browning concedes his audience is broader than that of male figure skaters in the past.
“I think it’s partly my background. Growing up on a farm in Alberta, I think people just get a different feel for me than other

The special takes Browning’s competition style a step further, giving him a chance to ham it up. In one segment, he recreates the Gene Kelly role in Singing in the Rain, skating through two inches of water under a downpour, with a realistic street scene in the background.
The skater’s second TV special (the first was Tall in the Saddle) reflects not only his growth as a skater and performer, but his familiarity with the camera.
“I learned from the first one how TV works so this time I did a lot more standing behind the camera deciding on shots, angles and things. I think the result is something that is a lot of fun.”
