Canadian youth who have made outstanding achievements are recognized in the seventh annual YTV “Achievement Awards,” airing Sunday. April 28. "It is an honor to be a Canadian and to receive an award like this,” says pianist Sonia Chan, this year's winner in the instrumental category. “YTV has such an impact on our generation and I think they’re doing a great job in encouraging the success and the potentials that our generation has and will have. I think that's really important." Each year, judges evaluate nominations in 15 categories and decide on the young person who best exemplifies the principles of that area. Larisa Oleynik The categories include bravery, environment, dance, sports, instrumental and acting. The winners receive a statue, a trip to Toronto and $3,000. Also, they are recognized in a televised ceremony, featuring well-known hosts and guest performers. This year's hosts include Larisa Oleynik (“The Secret World of Alex Mack”) and other familiar YTV faces, including Phil Guerrero (“The Zone”) and Paul McGuire (“The Breakfast Zone"). The winners this year range in age from 9 to 19. and each has displayed talent and determination in achieving personal goals. Chan, for example, fell in love with the piano when she was young, and at age 5 started taking lessons. “I was so fascinated by this huge instrument.” she reflects. “And seeing these black and white things stretch before me, and to be able to make all sorts of different sounds right at your fingertips, it grew on me, it really did.” Her passion and devotion helped her become one of the youngest graduates from Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music and have led to many awards and honors. The environmental winner, David Grassby, began working tirelessly for the environment when he read that a favorite pond of his was in danger of becoming biologically dead. “The pond was where I had learned how to skate and it meant a lot to me," he explains. “When I read that it was in trouble, I was really concerned. “I thought, here's one way I can contribute to a larger global problem.” Along with helping the environment, Grassby also learned a valuable lesson that can help him in future endeavors. “I learned that trying to get things done and make things happen is a very slow process." he says. "You have to be patient, and I guess persistence is what pays off.” Click! BUCKLE ' UP!
