New kid in track town HELSINKI (AP) — Frankie Fredericks of Namibia posted the third fastest time ever in the 100 metres, finishing in 9.87 seconds Tuesday to beat a field that included Canadian world champion Donovan Bailey. Frederick’s time was two one-hundreths off the world record held bv American Leroy Burrell. The only other faster time was a 9.86 by American Carl Lewis. Britain’s Linford Christie has also run a 9.87. Bailey, from Oakville, Ont., was third at 10.15, behind Britain’s Darren Braithwaite’s time of 10.13. The wind during the lOO-metre dash was 1.9 metres per second, which was within the limit required for a world record. Robinson out of Dream Team COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Reuter) — Milwaukee Bucks forward Glenn Robinson has withdrawn from the U.S Olympic men’s basketball team due to an injury. Robinson, who averaged 20.2 points and 6.2 rebounds in playing all 82 games for the Bucks last season, has tendinitis of the right Achilles tendon, USA Basketball said Tuesday. The selection committee is expected to name a replacement for Robinson on the squad being billed as Dream Team III later this week. Gunderson, Frazier suspended NEW YORK (AP) — Boston pitcher Eric Gunderson and Texas outfielder Lou Frazier each got three-game suspensions from the American League on Tuesday for their parts in a bench-clearing incident. After Gunderson hit Frazier with a pitch on June 15, Frazier charged the mound and the benches emptied. No punches were thrown, but Gunderson and Frazier were ejected. Gunderson appealed his suspension, which won’t take effect until a hearing is held. Frazier, who was sent down to Oklahoma City on Sunday, will begin serving his suspension when he returns to the major leagues. Sens signs centre Sergei Zholtok KANATA, Ont. (CP) — The Ottawa Senators added some depth at centre Tuesday, signing free agent Sergei Zholtok. Zholtok, 23, played for the IHL’s Las Vegas Thunder last season, scoring 51 goals and adding 50 assists in 82 games. The Russian played 25 games in the NHL with the Boston Bruins in 1992-93 and 1993-94. He was Boston’s second pick, 55th overall, in the 1992 entry draft. National team to name coach OTTAWA (CP) — The replacement for Tom Renney as head coach of the Canadian national hockey team will he announced Thursday in Toronto, Canadian Hockey says. Andy Murray, Renney’s assistant at the world championships in Vienna this year, is considered the leading contender for the job. Mike Johnson, Renney’s assistant coach the last two seasons, is another candidate. Renney left the national team program earlier this month to coach the Vancouver Canucks. Player loses suit over injury AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A jury ruled against centre Michel Mongeau of the IHL’s Peoria Rivermen, who sued when his kneecap was broken in a game last season. The jury deadlocked on a second issue involving another incident where Mongeau, 31, of Montreal, suffered seven broken facial bones. A U.S. District Court jury reached the verdict Monday. Mongeau had claimed that two Cleveland Lumberjacks players injured him deliberately and recklessly in two games.
