The Liquor Licence Board of Ontario has decided to allow OHL arenas to sell beer to spectators at their seats. The London Ice House and Barrie Molson Centre are the first two arenas to apply Others are expected to follow when word of the new regulation spreads The regulation was changed Aug 19, but the LLBO is waiting until the first licence is granted before going public The Ice House sold beer during the 1994-95 season when the London Wildcats were in the minor-professional Colonial Hockey League In 1990, the Ontario government and LLBO allowed minor-pro teams to sell beer in the seats, but OHL arenas weren't eligible The regulation applied only to professional sports in which the average age of the players was over 19, the legal drinking age in Ontario. LLBO executive director Barry Tocher said the regulation now has been changed to allow the average age of players to be less than 19. After a presentation by the Molson Centre and the Barrie Colts, the board deemed the team a professional operation because players are paid ($40 per week). The change has brought uncertain reaction from around the OHL, although a majority of teams in the two other Canadian major-junior leagues play in arenas were beer is sold to seated patrons Beer has never been an issue and it never gets out of hand,” said Manon Gagnon-Leroux, executive assistant of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. OHL commissioner Dave Branch is concerned the sale of beer may reflect on the image of the league He's disappointed the LLBO didn't consult the league ' The league has not taken a position because I’ve heard absolutely nothing," Branch said Wednesday The LLBO regulation requires five per cent of the seats to be designated as "dry." Ice House president Doug Tarry said slightly fewer than 1.000 sects, or about 20 per cent of the 4.573 seats at the London arena, will be dry With respect to mixing beer and junior hockey You'll have to take that up with the league We re doing this on the building end," said Tarry, whose family owns the arena and the London Knights. Calgary Flame German Titov, center, and Vancouver Canuck Bert Robertsson, right, struggle in front of net as the puck slides past Vancouver goalie Kirk McLean, during first period NHL exhibition action in Calgary. Flames burn Canucks in OT CALGARY (CP) — Robert Reichel scored 4:15 into overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks in NHL preseason action Thursday night. Fresh out of the penalty box, Flames defenceman Tommy Albelin led a 2-on-l breakout carrying the puck down the left wing before sliding it to Reichel at the far post. The veteran centre tucked the winner past sprawled goaltender Kirk McLean. For Reichel, who also had an assist, it was his first two points in three exhibition games since returning to the Flames after a playing last season in Germany. German Titov and Cale Hulse also scored for Calgary before a Canadian Airlines Saddledome crowd of 14,378. Replying for Vancouver were David Roberts and Pavel Bure, who collected his third goal and seventh point of the preseason. Lions change game time VANCOUVER (CP) — The B.C. Lions will even change a kickoff time in their desperate quest to attract more football fans. Faced with going head-to-head against the NHL Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 12, the bankrupt CFL team has moved its game time ahead by three hours. The Saturday menu now includes the Lions against the Edmonton Eskimos at 4:30 p.m., PDT, followed by the Canucks versus the St. Louis Blues at 7:30. Both sports stadiums — General Motors Place for hockey and B.C. Place for indoor football — are situated side by side in the False Creek area of downtown. Oilers sign Mironov EDMONTON (CP) — The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Boris Mironov to a one-year contract. Mironov, 24, had his best NHL season last year with eight goals and 24 assists. General manager Glen Sather said Mironov will report to the club’s training camp today. “We now expect Boris to continue to show the progress and consistency expected of a premier defenceman in the NHL. He’s blessed with great size and ability and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t become a leader on our blueline.” Mironov was acquired from the Winnipeg Jets on March 15,1994. IHL owner wants team HOUSTON (AP) — Chuck Watson, owner of the International Hockey League’s Houston Aeros, said Thursday he has applied for an NHL franchise. The NFL’s Houston Oilers have announced plans to move to Nashville, Tenn., and Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane has said he’ll move his team or sell it unless attendance increases and he gets a new stadium. The NHL confirmed Watson’s application and also said Oklahoma City and Nashville groups have applied for expansion franchises. Tyson trial goes to jury ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Ex-trainer Kevin Rooney’s claim that boxer Mike Tyson breached a career-long contract and owes him $49 million was put in the hands of a jury Thursday. In long closing arguments, the heavyweight champion was portrayed by Rooney’s lawyer as an “arrogant ingrate” for firing Rooney, while Tyson’s lawyer suggested the alleged contract that bound them was made up. Rooney trained Tyson for his first 35 fights but was fired in 1988 after Tyson became angry about the trainer’s public comments about his marriage and contract dispute with ex-manager Bill Cayton. Rooney claims Tyson’s mentor, Cus D’Amato,' and the boxer himself had promised he would be Tyson’s trainer for life, getting 10 per cent of his income. Sampras advances BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Top-ranked Pete Sampras advanced to the quarter-finals of the $l-million Swiss Indoors tennis championships Thursday, after a hard fought 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over German wild card Thomas Haas. “(Haas) was a lot more comfortable out there than the other time I played him,” said Sampras, winner of eight Grand Slam titles. “After the second set I was upset with myself because I couldn’t close it out. I think in the third set experience came through.” Haas, 18, is ranked No. 219 in the world but is considered one of the brightest prospects in men’s tennis. Favorties move on LONDON (AP) — Several of the favorites in the Cup-Winner’s Cup — Benfica, Liverpool, PSV Eindhoven and Fiorentina — moved into the second round of the competiton after first-round, second-leg matches Thursday.
