A recent survey showed one in three Ontarians who have been stuck on the side of the road had someone stop to help them. Women are least likely to stop, only 31 per cent said they felt comfortable stopping to help a stranded motorist. Andy Ingwersen (above) prepares to pull out in his 1957 Chevrolet The Interior (below) Is typical of vehicles from that era. ’57 Chevy reverts to taxi byDAVEHALLIDAY Southam Newspapers EDMONTON - Andy Ingwersen’s dream of owning a 1957 Chevrolet was squashed once by a crusher, but he never gave up hope. When Ingwersen, now 29, was 14 he was given a two-door sedan. Before he could arrange to have the car picked up, a scrap dealer took the vehicle. Several years later he spotted an ad for a 1957 Chevrolet four-door sedan. “I wanted one and I happened to see the deal on this one,” Ingwersen said of his car, which has been painted to look like a taxi. A neon roof sign used by Diamond Cab in Toronto in the 1950s, a Sunshine Cabs logo on the door, a 1957 taxi rate card and checkered stripes down both sides of the old Chevy complete the look. The car had been stored on a farm near Edson, Alta., for 12 years after being used for automotive training at the local high school. Using a towbar, Ingwersen hauled the Chevy back to Edmonton behind a pickup truck. The interior of the car was piled high with extra parts. The car Ingwersen, a service manager at Tagero Auto Service, hauled home is a 150 series sedan, which was the least expensive line sold by Chevrolet in 1957. It’s the type of vehicle that would have often ended up in taxi fleets or at a police department. The only options on the car were an automatic transmission and windshield washers. Blanking plates covered the holes for the radio, cigarette lighter and clock. When Ingwersen bought the car it was partly disassembled. The interior and other parts had been removed. The exterior of the car also needed help. There were numerous dents on the passenger side, possibly from bumps with jacks, hoists and other equipment in the high school auto shop. And the years of exposure to the elements left rust and faded paint. In contrast, “the driver’s side of the car was really decent,” Ingwersen said. He bought another car for parts, such as the windshield, interior and trunk lid. After changing body parts on the car, he repaired the body to get it ready to paint. He admits the body isn’t perfect but it fits in with the character of a taxi, which would have been subject to the dents and dings of continuous use. He installed new shocks before driving the car to Regina for Super Run ‘95. A loose generator bolt that allowed the fan belt to slip was the only trouble he encountered during the 1,600-kilome-tretrip.
