GM should be proud of Oldsmobile Intrigue The Oldsmobile Intrigue is an attempt by General Motors to give buyers a measure of European styling and Japanese handling by JEREMY CATO For Southam Newspapers EDMONTON — Not long ago — two years, maybe — Oldsmobile was the most tired of the six car divisions at General Motors. After 20 years of utter neglect and brand deterioration, many thought Olds was ready to join such forgotten names as Nash and Hudson in that great car lot in the sky. Today, Oldsmobile arguably has the hippest, slickest products in GM’s entire lineup. The Olds Alero is a very good compact sedan and coupe and the Oldsmobile Intrigue finally has the engine it should have had when it was launched a year ago. The engine is a thoroughly modern 3.5-litre V6 with overhead cams driving multiple valves. It’s smooth, it’s slick, it’s powerful and it’s an engine just like the ones offered for years in import rivals like the Nissan Maxima. Why it took Olds so long to get this engine into service remains a mystery for the ages. After all, it’s not exactly brand new from the ground up. In fact, this V6 represents a third variation on Cadillac’s excellent Northstar V8 (4.6-litres, 300 horsepower). The second variation is in use in yet another Oldsmobile, the Aurora luxury sedan. In the Intrigue, what you’re looking at is essentially a Northstar V8 with two cylinders lopped off. Some wags have dubbed it the “Shortstar.” Call it whatever, it’s the engine that completes the Intrigue package quite nicely. And it means your test drives of moderately-priced, nid-size four-door sedans (with sporting aspirations) should most definitely include this version of the Intrigue. Why? Typically, the Maximas, Honda Accords and Toyota Camry models with V6 engines develop 190 to 200 horsepower and run on premium fuel. The Intrigue engine makes more horsepower and torque on regular gas. So with the Intrigue you get equal or better fuel economy and a performance edge. How big an edge? The Intrigue with the 3.5 V6 will hit 100 km-h in under eight seconds, which is a shade faster than the Accord and Camry and a match for the Maxima. And that Maxima engine has been several times dubbed one of the world’s 10 Best Engines by Ward’s Automotive Reports. For now, the new 24-valve Intrigue V6 is standard on the top-of-the-line GLS model ($31,839) and it’s listed as a $795 option (with traction control) on the base GX ($27,199) and mid-range GL ($28,779). The standard engine in the GX and GL is GM venerable 195-h.p. 3.8-litre pushrod engine. As for the rest of the Intrigue, the ‘99 version hasn’t been changed in any other way from the ‘98 model introduced in 1997. And that’s no slight on what I think is probably the best car, dollar-for-dollar, in GM’s fleet. The Intrigue is GM’s best effort so far in developing a sedan to appeal to buyers who have always, always, always bought imports - Japanese imports, in particular. GM has attempted, with some success, to give buyers a measure of European styling and creature comforts combined with the ride and handling of a Maxima, Camry or Accord. The trick at Olds is to do all that with an Intrigue that is a bit less expensive, feature-for-fea-ture, than these import rivals. There is also the quality issue, which is largely the reason so many buyers defected from domestic cars in the first place. According to J.D. Power and Associates’ most recent Initial Quality Study, which measures owner-reported problems during the first 90 days after delivery, Oldsmobile and the Intrigue still trail the Japanese imports, but only by a little. Oldsmobile averaged 188 problems per 100 vehicles and the Intrigue scored 186. (The industry average was 176 for both vehicle lines and individual models.) Toyota and the Camry were 162 and 145, respectively, while Honda and the Accord were 150/137 and Nissan and the Maxima were 163/139. Yes, the numbers say those imports are a shade better, but in reality I’m not sure the average owner would be able to tell the difference in overall quality. But I do think most buyers or potential buyers will notice the Intrigue’s styling pizzazz. Not to get too cliched, but the Intrigue is a tidy design, not burdened by the excessive side-body cladding of some other GM cars, particularly those on the Pontiac side. Personally, I think it’s a handsome sedan. Even now, more than a year after my first test drive, I am struck by its shape. Inside, the cockpit is civil, attractive and generally logical. This car will transport five adults in comfort and the trunk will hold four sets of golf clubs. From behind the wheel, drivers will notice immediately the very precise steering. For sure there is steering feedback, but not kickback. Even with the steering wheel on-centre, the driver gets information about the road and what the Intrigue is doing on it, and turns are smooth, without friction. The Intrigue, then, is quiet, roomy and reasonably athletic and light years ahead of the Oldsmo-biles of the ’80s and most of the ’90s. It deserves a look from buyers shopping for a semi-athletic family sedan. The 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser is small on the outside, it has a generous amount of interior space when the three passenger seats are folded, which executives hope will appeal to a wide array of drivers. It offers access through four doors and a large rear hatch. It will sell for well under $20,000. Virtually every automaker is looking at crossover vehicles that combine the attributes of cars — usually better handling and performance — with the utility of minivans, sport utility vehicles and pickups. One of the first to hit the market, the Lexus RX300, is a car-based SUV that has been a big hit for Toyota. Its competitors have taken notice, and this year’s North American International Auto Show features a variety of crossovers. The question of what exactly the Cruiser is went unanswered by DaimlerChrysler officials after it was unveiled at the Detroit show. “This car is too cool to categorize,” co-chairman Robert J. Eaton said “We believe the PT Cruiser will truly break the harriers of conventional automotive design and function.” The announcement at the Detroit show was a Chrysler has announced the planned production of the PT Cruiser for the year 2000. surprise, though Eaton said the company has long planned to put such a vehicle into production. , The front-wheel-drive Cruiser will be powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine but a V6 may eventually be offered as an option. It will be offered with manual and automatic transmissions. The car’s bulbous look brought comparisons to Volkswagen’s New Beetle, which Eaton dismissed. “It’s a totally different kind of thing,” he said. “We didn’t want to do another traditional passenger car. We specifically wanted to get out of the envelope, out of the box, and we think we did that.”
