While nothing is set in stone, Radio-Canada says it intends to carry tonight’s Leafs-Canadiens matchup at the Air Canada Centre despite a strike by technicians at the English-language CBC. The technicians say they will not block other broadcasters from carrying tonight’s NHL game if the CBC agrees to give up its licence to broadcast the game. But Daniel Asselin, director of the French-language version of Hockey Night in Canada, said Friday his network would broadcast the game, the first NHL matchup at the new arena. “The strike doesn’t concern me,” Asselin said. “I have a contract with my employees. I have a contract with the Montreal Canadiens. “I’m bringing my own cameras from Montreal,” he said. “I’m bringing my own production staff.” Cynthia Deschatelets, a spokeswoman for Radio-Canada in Montreal, also said the game would be available on the network. “You can see it on the French network of Radio-Canada because the technicians of the French network aren’t on strike.” The fate of the game has been in doubt because of a strike by 2,000 CBC technicians and other personnel. CBC is only saying it plans to air two hockey games, beginning at 4 p.m. PST, but won’t say which ones. The Communications, Energy and Paperwork-ers union says it has assured CTV, Global and TSN that they would face only an information picket tonight if they carry the game. “We hope the CBC will agree to give the rights for broadcasting the game to one of the other networks so that Canadians can enjoy Hockey Night in Canada as they always have,” says Mike Sullivan, national representative for the union. Soles did not know about coverage plans by Radio-Canada, the French-language CBC service. “There are two games, and what we’re saying is we will not say which games will be car ried,” she said. “Notice that I’m not saying we can’t at this time say that. We’re not discussing it.” She said there would be no pre-game show, however, although she expected the CBC’s on-air talent will be at work. Published reports say the San Jose-Washington and Nashville-St. Louis games will be aired, although it may still be possible for CBC to get a feed from the Air Canada Centre from ESPN, the American sports channel, and put their own commentators on air from outside. See also page 11 Swissair antes up for crash workers HALIFAX (CP) — Fishermen and locals who helped in the Swissair Flight 111 recovery effort are getting a little more emergency cash from the airline — but the amount pales next to claims expected to hit $3 million or more. A Swissair spokeswoman says the airline has added $20,000 to a $25,000 emergency relief fund set up last fall for fishermen put out of work by the crash. It is also giving $20,000 to Blandford, N.S., and $10,000 each to Peggy’s Cove, N.S., and Indian Harbour, N.S. Jacqueline Pash said the money is not for any outstanding compensation claims. “We’re offering fishermen who are in dire emergency situations an opportunity not to be so at this time,” she said from New York. About 350 fishermen were temporarily shut out of rich fishing grounds when the Swissair MD-11 slammed into waters off scenic Peggy’s Cove last Sept. 2, killing all 229 aboard. An exclusion zone stretching about 80 kilometres south from Halifax restricted access to investigators collecting debris and wreckage. That kept about 350 tuna, lobster and mackerel fishermen out of the water for at least two weeks. Most were allowed back within a month. Swissair set up a $25,000 emergency relief fund last September after some fishermen said the lost income made it difficult to feed their families. Post office fee 'cruel’ PETERBOROUGH, Ont. (CP) — Canada Post wants a $32.50 change-of-address fee from a senior who moved from one second-floor apartment to another. Gertrude Morris made the move after Christmas so she could have a room looking over the Otonabee River. Her daughter, Kathryn Curran, of Keswick, Ont., calls the fee “outrageous” and won’t pay it. “This is cruel, a crying shame to put a senior through this,” she said. “Seniors get hit at every turn.” Curran said the letter carrier simply has to put her mom’s mail in a box that’s very close to the old one. Cracks blamed for pipeline explosion CALGARY (CP) — Cracks caused by stress, corrosion and certain soil conditions caused a pipeline explosion that sent a giant red mushroom cloud into the sky over Alberta’s Rocky Mountain foothills, a report into the blast says. Nova Gas Transmission Ltd.’s pipeline ruptured Feb. 7 near the ham1 let of Alder Flats, Alta., about 120 kilometres southwest of Edmonton. The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board ordered a report into the explosion from the company, which delivered its preliminary findings Friday. “We will take the data and evidence we gathered at the site and prepare a more detailed analysis,” said John Walker, vice-president of facilities maintenance for TransCanada Pipelines, Nova’s parent company. “We will look at all the data and review our maintenance plans for this section of the (pipeline) system to determine if they should be modified.” The invisible cracks in steel pipes, known as SCC, are created through a combination of stress, corrosion and certain environmental soil conditions. The National Energy Board launched a study into the phenomenon after a natural gas explosion on TransCana-da’s main line near Rapid City, Man., in 1996. In its report, the board called for stronger inspection, monitoring, research and SCC management programs at all pipeline companies. Suicidal gunman goes on rampage CALGARY (CP) — Residents living in a northeast neighbourhood were besieged by a spray of bullets early Friday when a suicidal gunman opened fire on their street. Police said the man committed suicide minutes later by setting his car on fire at a nearby mall. More than 25 rounds from a shotgun and a .22-calibre weapon smashed windows and ripped through doors. Police were called to the street around 1:40 a.m. but the man had fled in a car. A short time later, a vehicle matching the description was found on fire at a shopping centre parking lot. Margaret Sincovich and her husband Luciano said they were awakened by a loud noise and not knowing it was gunfire, went to a window to look. “My husband couldn’t get the blind up and we found out later it’s because he’d already shot the window,” said Margaret, who then switched on a bedroom light. “When I hit the light switch, he immediately put two shots in our window ... it missed my hus-, band’s head by two to four inches right at forehead level. That’s when I knew we were in trouble.” ULTIMATE QUALITY CARPET GUARANTEED LOWEST PRICES IN CANADA 'The location given reflects the high school from which the student graduated where possible, otherwise it indicates address of application.
