(CP) — Ford Canada is adding 300 jobs at two of its engine plants in southwestern Ontario to meet the growing demand for new trucks and sport utility vehicles. Starting early next year, capacity at the Windsor Engine Plant will be increased by 100,000 to 950.000 engines annually, Ford said in a news release. About 200 jobs will be created at that plant, which makes V8 and VIO Triton engines. A second shift will be added to the Low Volume Line. Another 100 jobs will be added at Essex Engine Plant, which will be upgraded for machining cylinder blocks and crankshafts for V8 and VIO engines. A total of 6,203 hourly and salaried employees work at the five plants that make up Ford’s operations in this southwestern Ontario border city. “We face strong consumer desire for more powerful, yet fuel-efficient, engines for their trucks and SUVs,” said Bobbie Gaunt, Ford Canada’s chief executive. “We want them to know that we hear them and are taking necessary actions to meet their needs.” The announcement marks the second production increase for the Windsor Engine Plant this year. On Jan. 4, Ford announced it would boost the plant’s output of 5.4 L Triton engines by 50.000 units. The plant, which produced 615,840 Triton V8s last year, was originally built in 1922. It was shut down in 1990, then rebuilt and re-opened in 1994 as a high-tech engine plant. “Our team had to do some unconventional, ' out of the box’ thinking to come up with a strategy... to increase the flexibility of the Windsor plants,” said Jim Solberg, Ford Motor Co.’s executive director of manufacturing operations. The new engines are destined for assembly in truck and sport-utility vehicles, the hot-selling segment of North America’s auto market that has helped boost sales at Ford Canada and its U.S. parent. Ford Canada’s overall vehicles sales rose just a fraction to 27,606 in March from 27,590 in the same 1998 period. But huge sales increases on several truck lines overcame a drop in car sales. Sales of trucks — which bring in much more profit than passenger cars — jumped 15 per cent to 20,366 from 17,737, with Explorer sport utility vehicles, F-series pickups and Windstar minivans leading the way.
