At a star-studded gathering in Beverly Hills, Beatty ripped into the political establishment both right and left and made the leading U.S. presidential candidates look like men consigned to walk-on parts. Soberly dressed in a gray suit and white shirt, Beatty, 62, put on an Oscar-worthy performance and accused Democrats and Republicans of participating in a “slow-motion coup d’etat of big money interests over the public interest.” Amid a frenzy of more than 150 reporters from around the world, Beatty’s sometimes passionate, sometimes teasing speech kept his Hollywood audience spellbound in a dizzying reminder of the power of charisma and celebrity. But Beatty, who has played everything from a communist in Reds to a disillusioned senator Actor Warren Beatty and his wife Annette Bening arrive for a dinner hosted by the Southern California Americans for Democratic Action, in Beverly Hills. in Bulworth, didn’t say he would run — but also didn’t take himself out of the race. The Los Angeles Times said the media turnout for Beatty’s speech dwarfed the attendance at any of the major policy speeches by the leading candidates from either party this year. “Maybe the fact that Warren Beatty is drawing all this interest reflects on the candidates. There really isn’t anybody from the progressive left in the campaign. Beatty is attractive and articulate whether you agree with him or not,” said Larry Berg, founding director of the Jesse Unruh Institute of Politics at the University of Southern California. And Beatty isn’t the only Hollywood star testing the political waters. Austrian-born Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, weighed in from the right and expressed interest in running for California governor in 2002. “The possibility is there because I feel it inside. I feel there are a lot of people standing still and not doing enough. And there’s a vacuum,” Schwarzenegger told Talk magazine in an interview released Thursday. Schwarzenegger described himself as a compassionate conservative and admitted that in the past he had “inhaled, exhaled everything.” Russian troops seize Chechen territory GROZNY, Russia (CP) — Russian ground troops entered Chechnya on Thursday, taking positions on strategic heights near the border and reportedly advancing as far as 10 kilometres into the breakaway republic. The moves followed a week of air strikes on the Chechen capital of Grozny that have sent nearly 80,000 Chechens fleeing in fear. It raised concern that Russia is on the verge of another full-scale war in Chechnya just three years after a humiliating and costly defeat there. The end of that war in 1996 effectively gave Chechnya independence, but left much of the republic in ruins and with an ineffective government. Islamic militants, who have thrived in the lawless conditions, invaded the neighbouring Russian republic of Dagestan in August, setting off the latest fighting. The militants, who want an independent Islamic nation in southern Russia, also are blamed for a series of apartment explosions in Moscow and two other cities in September that killed some 300 people. Russia is attempting to stamp out the militants with what they call a “pinpoint campaign” of air strikes hitting targets used by FRASER-FORT GEORGE REGIONAL DISTRICT 987 Fourth Avenue, Prince George, B.C. ON Thursday, October 28,1999 03 cn Ardelle Bernardo 2 Chief Election Officer ° Canadian airlines lagging in Y2K cleanup: U.S. report WASHINGTON (CP) — Some regional and charter airlines in Canada have yet to clear their operations of potential millennium bugs, a report by the U.S. Department of Transport suggests. But Canadian airports and airlines are generally rated among the best-prepared for any Y2K troubles, the report said. “While there is no guarantee that Y2K-related problems will not occur, the probability of numerous, lengthy or severe disruptions in the civil-aviation system of this country is anticipated to be low,” the report said, which was posted on the Internet on Thursday. More than one-third of the countries most frequently visited by U.S. travellers provided inadequate information about Y2K preparations, making it impossible to determine whether they are safe to fly in. France is among those that failed to furnish enough data to judge their readiness to handle Y2K problems and travellers are urged to take precautions while travelling there. “We can say that eight of the top 20 (destination countries), including the top three — Canada, the U.K. and Japan — are ready,” Mort Downey, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration official responsible for Y2K readiness, told a congressional hearing. The Year-2000 problem is glitch that may cause malfunctions on Jan. 1 in computer software written to recognize years in a two-digit format, as the year 99 changes to 00. The report examined airports and air carriers around the world and based on information volunteered by those being examined. Canadian Airlines, currendy the subject of takeover and merger talks along with Air Canada, has not completed its Y2K preparations, the report indicated. But a spokesperson with the airline said the report’s information is out of date. “All vital and critical equipment vendors, manufacturers and suppliers have been contacted five times,” said Karen Burkhout. The airline has been Y2K-ready since July 26, she said. The U.S. Department of Transport suggested Canadian stated on Aug. 20 it had yet to contact “all equipment vendors and manufacturer suppliers” about potential problems associated with the new millennium. ON Thursday, October 28,1999 w Ol Ardelle Bernardo 2 Chief Election Officer ° NEW YORK (CP) — Giving new meaning to the phrase pie in the sky, Pizza Hut plans to boldly go where no restaurant chain has gone before — outer space. Well, almost. Pizza Hut hopes to capture the world’s attention by placing a nine-metre logo on the unmanned Russian Proton rocket that will launch the new living quarters of the International Space Station. The logo will be emblazoned on the fuselage of the 61-metre-tall rocket that will launch the station’s service module in November. The Russian-designed module will provide living space for astronaut engineers and sci- entists to live and work. Although the section of the rocket with the ad will burn up without ever leaving the atmosphere, Pizza Hut is hoping it will make it into millions of living rooms through television cameras covering the historic launch. The chain said it expects 500 million viewers to watch the launch on TV. The logo should be directly in view of the world’s television cameras when the rocket is launched from Kazakhstan in mid-November, said Dallas-based Pizza Hut, a unit of Tricon Global Restaurants Inc. Company officials plan to use the Proton launch as the centrepiece of a major space-oriented ad campaign, including commercials featuring the blastoff and instore promotions. the guerrillas. Meanwhile, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin confirmed Thursday that ground operations were also under way. In comments in St. Petersburg, Putin stopped short of saying Russia would mount an full-scale invasion, but made clear the official view was troops could cross the border at will. “Chechnya is Russian territory and the movement of our troops can take place wherever needed,” Putin told reporters. “I can say that they have entered (Chechnya) several times. Two weeks ago they took strategic heights, freed them and so on.” East Timor guerrillas seeking role DILI (AP) — Ragged, unshaven guerrilla fighters — the likely leaders of an independent East Timor — descended from the mountains Thursday seeking a role in the emerging country, as the United States put pressure on Indonesia to help refugees return home. The Falintil guerrillas, who battled Indonesian troops since the occupation of East Timor began in 1975, came to the capital Dili in a truck packed with weapons they said were left behind by the Indonesian army. They turned them over to international forces but refused to give up their own guns. “Falintil will not hand over weapons,” said leader Cornelio Goma. “We are the national liberation force of East Timor.” The return to Dili of 30 guerrillas, their hair and beards uncut, thrilled people who had cheered for a guerrilla victory for more than two decades. It was the first time in three years that Goma, the guerrillas’ deputy commander for the Dili area, had been in the capital. Goma offered his 500 troops for joint patrols with the international forces — a proposal Maj.-Gen. Peter Cosgrove, the head of the force, apparently plans to decline. Cosgrove welcomed Goma’s visit and hoped to negotiate for the guerrillas’ disarmament. Palestinians get Canadian boats JERUSALEM (AP) — Canada donated two search and rescue boats to the Palestinian Authority at a ceremony in Gaza on Thursday. The Palestinian Coastal Police will operate the vessels. Canada, which donated $8.5 million in aid to the Palestinian Authority last year, provided training for the tiny Palestinian coast guard and plans additional training later, officials said. Gaza has a 40-kilometre coastline on the Mediterranean Sea.
