C:3 32 - The Prince George Citizen - Friday, June 23, 2000 Men are also victims of domestic violence Dear Ann Landers: I am pleased that you have an informed viewpoint on men as victims of domestic violence. You have said abused men should receive the same help as abused women, but this problem is still largely ignored. For years, we were told violence against women was underreported because of the social stigma. As soon as public-awareness campaigns were initiated, there was a dramatic increase in the number of abused women who were willing to step forward and seek help. Don’t you believe the same would happen if abused men were encouraged to step forward as well? There is an even greater social stig- abused women. But they must be willing to identify themselves, and many are reluctant to do so. That’s where the problem lies. I say, SPEAK UP, GUYS. Dear Ann Landers: Here’s another one for your stupid crooks file. It appeared in the Rochester, N.Y., Democrat & Chronicle recently, and really made me laugh: The owner of a residence returned home late at night. Upon entering the house, he heard footsteps and the sounds of drawers being opened and shut. The homeowner called out, “Who’s there?” The intruder answered, “It’s me, but I’m leaving right away.” How do you like that one, Ann? — N.Y. Reader Dear Reader: I like it a lot, and I’m glad he left “right away.” Let’s hope he didn’t take anything of value with him. Gem of the Day: People expect too much of journalism these days — not only do they expect it to be entertaining, they expect it to be true. (Credit Lewis Lapham) Dear readers: A word about those telemarketers who too often interrupt your supper or phone at inopportune times: Please have a little patience. They are decent, hard-working people who are trying to earn some extra money. Treat them with the same courtesy with which you would want your son or daughter treated under similar circumstances. ADVICE ON LIFE by Ann Landers ma that prevents men from coming forward. In our society, we encourage a macho attitude that says men should be able to take care of themselves. Also, in case you don’t know it, the Violence Against Women Act explicidy says all money should be used for women’s support only. There is no gov- ernment protection or support allocated for abused men. Please, Ann, publicize this unjust treatment, and help us out. — Bill in New York Dear Bill: We now know that many males are also abused by their mates, and I agree that they should receive the same governmental support as
