OnTheSide Wells wins 14th BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles had only one obstacle in their quest to complete a four-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays: David Wells. The 250-pound left-hander proved to be too big a hurdle to clear. Wells earned his major league high 14th win and Tony Batista hit his second grand slam of the season as Toronto salvaged the final game of the series, beating the Orioles 6-4 Monday. Carlos Delgado also homered for the Blue Jays, who lost the first three games of the series by a combined 23-10 score before rebounding behind their burly ace. Roberts courted by Leafs TORONTO (CP) — The future of NHL free agent Gary Roberts could become clear by Tuesday. The 34-year-old winger, who became an unrestricted free agent last week, has generated interest from about six NHL teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs. Rick Curran, Roberts’ agent, said Monday there will likely be an announcement about Roberts’ plans by Tuesday. The Maple Leafs are also interested in 33-year-old unrestricted free agent Shayne Corson. Sampras: Tm not faking’ LONDON (AP) — A cynic watching Pete Sampras sprint like Carl Lewis and leap like Kobe Bryant might wonder: Is he hyping his leg injury? Sampras didn’t appear hurt in the slightest Monday in a 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 fourth-round romp on Centre Court over Jonas Bjorkman, a gifted grass-court player who looked like a statue compared to the six-time Wimbledon champion. When Bjorkman offered a rather indiffeient handshake after the match, Sampras read into it a bit of suspicion by the Swede that Sampras was faking the seriousness of the tendinitis above his left ankle. “I’m sure there are a lot of cynical players out there, reading all this stuff,*’ said Sampras, who matched his previous best Wimbledon winning streak with his 25 th straight win and ran his record to 50-1 over the past seven years. “I can tell the way Jonas shook my hand today (what) he was thinking.” Streaker targets Anna LONDON (AP) —A man calling himself “a professional streaker” interrupted a doubles match involving Anna Kournikova at Wimbledon on Monday. The middle-aged man stepped over a barrier behind the players on Court 14 during a changeover, dropped his shorts and pranced around on court for about a minute, while fans cheered. He flopped over the net in a clumsy somersault and danced some more before guards chased him down. Kournikova and partner Natasha Zvereva then resumed their match, finishing the first set and going on to beat Amy Frazier and Katie Schlukebir 6-2, 6-1. The man was released with no charges filed. He identified himself to a reporter as a 35-year-old from Liverpool, England, who worked as a “professional streaker” and had exposed himself 156 times in public. Petty delays track return LEVEL CROSS, N.C. (AP) — Two months after his son’s death, Kyle Petty has decided it’s too soon to return to the racetrack where he was killed. Petty will skip Sunday's New England 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway, Petty Enterprises announced Monday. Adam Petty was killed at the track May 12 while practising for a Busch Series race. Isles sign two players UNION DALE, N.Y. (AP) — The New York Islanders signed defenceman Kevin Haller and centre Mike Stapleton on Monday, as the rebuilding team continued its busy off-season. Haller, a free agent, played 67 games last season for Anaheim. He had three goals and five assists. Stapleton, also a free agent, spent last season with the expansion Atlanta Thrashers, scored 10 goals and set up 12 others in 62 games.
