The Prince George Citizen - Saturday, August 12, 2000 - 33 CAREER OPPORTUNITIES NEW VISA CARD GIVES CREDIT TO CONSUMERS WITH SHAKY HISTORY TORONTO (CP) — A national trust company has launched a credit card for people who are otherwise unable to buy on plastic because they have a bad credit history or no record of credit at all. Beginning in September, Home Trust Co. and First Data Corp. will offer the Visa card announced Thursday, at a fee of $72 a year. The catch: users must first put down a deposit equal to the line of credit — a minimum of $300, on which they will be paid interest at a rate of five per cent. “These are people who are either emerging into the marketplace or who have had credit problems in the past and need to re-establish their credit,” said Gerald Soloway, president of Home Trust. Soloway says everyone needs a credit card in the current retail climate, where you can’t purchase things over the Internet or rent a car without plastic. According to the company’s estimates, there are four million adult Canadians who don’t own a credit card. “There are so many facets of today’s society where it’s absolutely essential to have a credit card. Having the cash alone just doesn’t work in a lot of situations.” The company’s main target groups is university students, people taking their first jobs and new immigrants who of- ten leave behind a good credit record in their native lands but haven’t established a history in Canada. The problem is that you can’t develop a credit rating until you have paid back a loan, says Gail Vaz-Oxlade in The Borrower’s Answer Book. “A credit card is one of the easiest ways to establish a credit rating,” she says, but they can be difficult to obtain. Card issuers are careful because statistics show people give credit card payments a lower priority than mortgage payments or instalment loans. But Soloway believes “there’s a very low risk” for Home, a major lender to self-employe people or those with limited credit hi: tories who can’t get mortgage loan from the big banks or other conver tional lenders.
