Exactly what role, if any, is played by global warming is still unclear, however. The study of core samples taken from coral reefs dating back to 1840 indicates El Nino happened only about once every 10 years in the mid-1800s, compared with the current cycle of about once every four years. But there was also evidence of cycles as short as three years from the late 1800s to about 1920. The cycles settled into their current pattern around 1955. El Nino refers to the movement of warm water from the western Pacific to the central and eastern expanse of the ocean. It causes widespread climate changes, such as heavy rain in the western United States and drought in Australia and southeastern Africa. 25% Jessie Toth Manager Scientists have debated whether global warming from the buildup of greenhouse gases affects how often El Ninn appears. The new study, appearing in Thursday’s issue ol the journal Nature, suggests any such influence would be complicated, said one of the researchers. “It’s not like we can say El Ninos are going to be more frequent,” said Julia Cole of the University of Arizona. “We see a lot of natural variability as well.” Cole and fellow researchers extracted 7.5-cen-timetre-wide cores from underwater coral reefs on the Maiana atoll, about 4,000 kilometres southwest of Hawaii. Then they measured a rare isotope of oxygen that is less common in coral when the ocean is warmer and less salty—conditions typical of El Nino. Recent samples matched records of El Nino events since the 1950s, making researchers confident that the older core samples were also good indicators. Just like Antarctic, Arctic faces ozone damage LONDON, (Reuters) — One of the British scientists who discovered the ozone hole over the Antarctic fears the same damage could hit the Arctic by 2020. Jonathan Shanklin said the earth’s ozone layer was cooling, which makes its recovery more difficult. Shanklin, one of three scientists to discover the Antarctic ozone hole in 1985, told BBC Radio: “It’s getting colder because of the greenhouse gases that are being liberated by all the emissions we have at the surface. “We think that within the next 20 years we are likely to see an ozone hole perhaps as big as the present one over Antarctica but over the North Pole.” This year’s Antarctic hole was the largest ever recorded. It reached as far as the Falkland Islands and the tip of South America where people were warned to protect themselves against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. Amos 3:3 This past summer, Pope John Paul II issued a statement that the Roman Catholic Church is the only true church. In his document Dominus Jesus, the Pope stated that other religions are ‘defective.’ He says, “there exists a single Church of Christ which subsists in the Catholic Church, governed by the Successor of Peter and by the bishops in communion with him.” I’m sure the Vatican’s reassertion on this matter took a lot of ecumenical churches and leaders by surprise, but it should not have. This claim is neither new nor surprising. Rome has always held this position and is only restating its historic position. The Bishop of Rome is NOT the head of all Christendom by some “diving right.” That position belongs uniquely to the Lord Jesus Christ who is the only Head of His Church! (A belief that is imbedded in the creeds of all Protestant churches.) Keeping this in mind, it is most interesting to find within our city Christian ministers from the Prince George Ministerial Association who are willing to bring their Protestant churches into an ever-closer communion with the Church of Rome. In a circular dated May 30, 2000 from the PGMA Executive under the title, A Proposal Regarding MINISTERIAL Join us for our Lord’s Day Services Sunday School 10:00 am Morning Worship 11:00 am Evening Service 6:30 pm IDENTITY MODIFICATION, we find this. “On May 18, and ad hoc committee (From the P.G.M.A.) met with members of PLURA (Presbyterian, Lutheran, United, Roman Catholic and Anglican churches) to discuss the issue of the Ministerial’s possible modification to be more representative of the larger community.”... “The Ministerial Committee concluded that there is value in the Association’s willingness to look at new ways to foster a more co-operative relationship with lion-participating members of the larger Christian community.” The prophet Amos asked the rhetorical question, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” The answer is a resounding, unqualified, “NO!” The apostle Paul puts it even more graphically in his second letter to the Corinthian church. Take time to read II Corinthians 6:14-18. Every child of God must read it prayerfuly and carefully. The issues are great, the situation most serious, the stakes are high. God calls for separation from all that is against Christ and His truth. Separation never means “a more co-operative relationship,” “come out” never means “stay in,” and “touch not” never means “to embrace.” Heritage Free Presbyterian Church 4020 Balsum Road, Prince George Questions or comments?
