ODDITIES So you wanna be a Lord LONDON (Reuters) — Time was when one had to be bom into Britain’s House of Lords. Then they started appointing Lords for life, who could not pass on die tide to heirs. Now Britons can apply tor the job, or they could until Friday, when the deadline for nominations ran out. About 2,000 people have put in to become peers. The unprecedented chance to apply for the title was announced in September as part of the government’s attempts to make the second chamber of Parliament seem more representative and less of an anachronism. Only about a dozen Lords will be selected in this wave of applicants to wear ermine-trimmed robes and sit in the gilded chamber at the south end of the Houses of Parliament. But the plan is to have a new intake of self-nominated Lords every year so over time, the chamber will not have so many white, male, elderly members. “We hope we will get outstanding applications from groups who are perhaps at the moment not represented or underrepresented in the House of Lords,” Lord Stevenson, chairman of the new non-partisan appointments committee, told the BBC. The committee will go through the applications and nominate a shortlist to Prime Minister Tony Blair next spring. The qualifications for the job, apart from being over 21, were listed as integrity, independence and a “significant record of achievement in their chosen field or way of life.” But there is no salary; Lords are only able to claim expenses. The opposition Tories have poured scorn on the plan, noting Blair would still forward the names to the Queen, as he has done with other Lords appointments. Blair kicked all but 92 of the hereditary peers out last year in a first wave of reform for the Lords, which date back to medieval times. But at the same time, he has appointed over 200 people to tire chamber since coming to power in May 1997. cmilN AT TOUR SERVICE HotnQW C&Ktim Newspapers.
