12 - The Prince George Citizen, REAL ESTATE SHOWCASE - Saturday, April 7,2001 Unique housing development helps ease inner-city sprawl From page 6 by KATHY MCCORMICK Southam Newspapers ATLANTA, Ga. - And you think you have problems. Adanta is the fastest-growing city in America with the number one housing market to match its suburban growth. The city’s radius has spread to a bulging 170 kilometres, with the ’burbs further and further away. As such, the average worker commutes more than 80 km a day - another dubious record. The major freeways have electronic messages that tell you how many minutes it will take to get to some major point downtown, if you’re lucky. If you’re unlucky, it tells you how many hours. Traffic congestion and air pollution are at record levels; highways are overextended ... and it goes on. In this contest, when the site of the latest, unique housing development was unveiled at the International Builders’ Show, everyone agreed the site couldn’t be better. In fact, the Live/Work 2001 concept is situated just blocks from downtown in the middle of a former industrial area: decayed warehouses, graffiti, piles of garbage, and nary a homeowner are in sight. It’s an area primed for urban renewal, and condos are an important part of that renewal. It not only comes at a time when people are actively seeking to move closer to the downtown core, but at a time when home offices are becoming an important segment of the housing sector. “Roughly 20 million people operate a business from home (in the U.S.),” said Boyce Thompson, editor-in-chief of Builder magazine, one of the partners in the project. “Another 30 million take work home, or operate satellite offices. They don’t have any real choices when it comes to buying a new home. These homes point to a huge new business opportunity for builders and an exciting new option for buyers.” At the heart of the design is Andres Duany of the architectural firm of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company - a man widely considered to be the father of the new urbanist movement. Calgarians know Duany’s work - he was the one behind the whole concept of McKenzie Towne, Carma’s neo-tradi-tional community in the southeast quadrant of the city. Beazer Homes, one of the largest builders south of the border, is the other partner. More page 26 Are you thinking of Selling? Do you want lots of Exposure? Do you want more than just a Lawn Sign?
