OnTheSide Alberta govt, shy on CHA EDMONTON (CP) — The Canadian Hockey Association asked for up to $5 million from the Alberta government to expand its programs Monday, but cabinet minister Gene Zwozdesky would make no promises. • Zwozdesky urged the CHA to make its request at this fall’s Future Summit, a forum on how Alberta can spend its cash once its debt is paid off. A CHA delegation — which included former Calgary Flames president Bill Hay, Mountie and hockey coach Gary Mills, CHA president Bob Nicholson and Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Smyth — made the pitch to the Tories’ community living committee. Smyth, who played minor hockey in Banff, Alta., told the committee any investment in amateur sport was an investment in youths. “I look back at all those minor hockey teams I have played for and I am thankful for all the opportunities I have had,” Smyth said. Nicholson said it hopes to raise $5 million for an endowment to expand minor hockey development. Wrigley Field expanding CHICAGO (AP) — No, there won’t be a Jumbotron looming over centre field. And yes, the ivy is staying put. The Chicago Cubs plan to renovate the outfield bleacher section and add seats behind home plate, none of which will make the historic park look much different than it has since it opened in 1914. “Our goal was to design a project... that at the end of the day, people look at it say, ’It looks like it always was there, that it fits in Wrigley Field,”’ said Mark McGuire, the Cubs executive vice president of business operations, said Monday. “We have no intention of playing with the icon scoreboard, ivy, marquee — the things we all could agree are really the core elements of Wrigley Field,” he said. The renovations will add 2,300 seats to Wrigley, which currently has a capacity of 39,059, and cost $11 million. The changes will be completed by the start of next season, assuming approval by the city of Chicago approves the plans.
