LOCAL We have been hearing so much about agility with the success of Canadian Agility Championships over this past weekend. What a positive and exuberating chance to bond with your pet. Did you know there is also agility for horses? The sport dubbed combined driving (also known as CDE) is a fast-moving, water-splashing, invigorating sport that combines the tradition of carriage driving in dressage and the excitement and challenge of a marathon, as well as the precision of an obstacle course. The horses, like the dogs in Agility, come in all shapes, sizes, breeds, and cross breeds. It's one of the few sports where age and sex isn't a factor. It is a three-phase test consisting of dressage, marathon, and cones, with each phase of the competition looking for a differ- The Prince George Citizen Monday, August 25, 2003 23 Horses have their own tests of agility ANIMAL TRACKS by Kathi Travers ent aspect of the horse's training and the driver's capability to work the horse. Dressage is a test in which movement demonstrates the training and obedience of the team. It can be likened to that of the sport of figure skating where precision and elegance and tradition is the key. Marathon is a cross-country obstacle course consisting of three to five timed sections. Eight man-made obstacles are constructed often through treed areas and water. The ability of the driver and endurance of the horse is tested. Safety is always the number one priority. The objective is to produce what appears to be an effortless test, despite its difficulty. The third phase is cones, in which a series of up to 20 pairs of numbered cones are set up. The course must be driven in sequence within a time allowance. Each phase has it's own scoring system. Speed is not the issue. Accuracy and precision are. This sport helps to establish a positive relationship between horse and driver with a goal to better communication and training with the horse. If this fast growing sport tweaks your interest, Ken Huber, from Mission, will be in Prince George, Sept. 5-7. He will be conducting a driving clinic, introducing the participants to the exciting world of driving. Some of the topics to be covered include theory, harness fitting, long lining, as well as the sport of combined driving. If you don't have a horse and cart no problem. They are available to rent. For more information, or to book space, call Sue Allen at 563-1670. Space is limited. On another note: Last weekend Ted Coole and his gang at the Roadhouse Cabaret once again demonstrated what great humanitarians they really are. Saturday evening was dedicated to help the animals in distress in the disastrous fires in Kamloops. Super Dog was even there and was seen cutting the rug on the dance floor. Big puppy kisses to Ted and his staff. Don't forget to pick up your pledge sheets for Jog-a-Dog. The 2003 event is happening on Sept. 7 at Cottonwood Island Park.
