HOCKEY Another milestone for Mario Canadian Press Pittsburgh star Mario Lemieux wasn't much in the mood to celebrate his historic 1,700th career point after watching his Penguins blow a two-goal lead against the New York Islanders on Wednesday. Lemieux became the sixth player in NHL history to reach the 1,700-points plateau with an assist that started a four-goal run by Pittsburgh, but the New York Islanders scored twice in the third period for a 4-4 tie. "I thought we were going to win the way we played the first two periods," said Lemieux, who had a point in his seventh straight game. "It's disappointing." Not necessarily to the Islanders, who are 9-1-1-3 in their last 14 games against Pittsburgh. "It's bad the way we played in (Pittsburgh's two-goal) second period," Islanders goalie Garth Snow said. "But in the hole two goals in the third period and to come back and salvage a point, it's good." With the Islanders up 2-0 late in the first, Lemieux took Konstantin Koltsov's pass along the right boards, slipped the puck between the legs of defenceman Janne Niinimaa, then made a backhanded pass to the slot to Dick Tarnstrom for his second goal of the season. L e m i e u x j o i n s Way n e G r et z k y (2,857), Gordie Howe (1,850), Mark Messier (1,847), Marcel Dionne (1,771) and Carolina Hurricanes captain Ron Francis (1,760s) on the 1,700point list. Only Gretzky reached the mark faster than Lemieux. Blues 6 Red Wings 5 At Detroit, Doug Weight had the second three-goal game of his career and Dallas Drake collected five assists as St. Louis ended the Red Wings' club record 15-game home winning streak. Flyers 5 Panthers 1 At Philadelphia, Michal Handzus and Joni Pitkanen each had a goal and assist and Robert Esche stopped 21 shots for the Flyers. The Prince George Citizen Thursday, October 30, 2003 11 Joseph told he'll start DETROIT (AP) -- Goaltender Curtis Joseph of the Detroit Red Wings will get his first of the season against the Nashville Predators tonight. Detroit coach Dave Lewis announced his decision following the Red Wings' 65 loss to St. Louis on Wednesday night. Joseph will be making his first NHL start since undergoing surgery Aug. 19 to remove bone chips from his right ankle. He made a rehabilitation start Oct. 24 for Grand Rapids of the AHL and had 20 saves in his first minorleague game in eight seasons. The Red Wings are looking to trade Joseph since six-time Vezina Trophy winner Dominik Hasek ended his oneyear retirement. Joseph, who carries an $8-million US salary, is in his 15th NHL season. Manny Legace will be Joseph's backup against Nashville. Legace replaced Hasek early in the second period Wednesday night after Hasek allowed four goals on 13 shots. MONTREAL (CP) -- The feast of goals that had the Montreal Canadiens fat and happy in the first two weeks of the NHL season has suddenly become a famine. The Canadiens are on a three-game losing run and have been outscored 10-0 in their last seven periods of hockey. Their forwards have not scored in three straight games. "We need to work harder," centre Mike Ribeiro said Wednesday. "We're behind the play all the time. "We need to be first on the puck. Then we can create scoring chances and draw penalties on the other team. We need to shoot and drive to the net." The Canadiens shot off to a 5-2-0-0 start on tight defensive play and opportunistic counterattacks, but they have been swamped in their last three -- a 6-2 loss to Ottawa, a 5-0 pounding in Philadelphia and a 2-0 loss at home to Boston on Tuesday night. They face a rematch in Boston tonight. Yes, we are open during our renovations! Earl is changing his look, but not his philosophies. Earls for the love of food. Come in and see the progress! OTTAWA (CP) -- The Ottawa Senators are off to a nearperfect start to the new NHL season, but there's still plenty of room for improvement both on the ice and at the box office. Having taken 11 of 14 possible points from their first seven games, the Senators are so far dealing successfully with the high expectations of fans in the nation's capital and the host of pundits that predict a trip to the Stanley Cup final for the team. "We have high expectations for ourselves and so do the fans, and that's part of the game and you have to accept that when you have a good team," centre Jason Spezza said. "For us to get off to a good start, it's good. There are a lot of teams winning right now and there are a lot of teams that weren't expected to win right away that are winning so that's going to make it that much harder for teams to make the playoffs and do well." The hot start was also felt at the box office. In three home dates, the Senators have twice sold out the 18,500-seat Corel Centre and are averaging 18,396 fans per game -- which is up from 15,176 at the same point last year. However, considering 2,200 tickets were still available as of Wednesday for tonight's game against Florida and 4,300 were up for grabs for a Saturday visit by Buffalo, it appears the Senators still face an battle to sell tickets on their own merit. "The fan support is definitely there, it's just a matter of if they come to the games or not," Spezza said. "It would be nice to have the rink filled every game." Contract Problems? Brule has been called the Western Hockey League's answer to Sidney Crosby, who is lighting up the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the Rimouski Oceanic. Brule, from North Vancouver, is among the WHL's scoring leaders and is a key in the early success this season of the Giants, ranked No. 8 in the Canadian Hockey League this week. Brule has heard the comparisons to Crosby before. "It's not really a big deal as long as I'm playing well," he said. "I don't really like being compared to people, but that happens sometimes." The WHL doesn't have the QMJHL's reputation as a high-scoring league, which makes Brule's numbers significant. With 10 goals and 10 assists in 17 games, he has given the Giants scoring depth the team did not have in its first two years of existence. "The season has just started and we've got a lot of games yet," said Brule. "I'm happy with my performance so far, but I think I can do better and work harder than I am right now." Brule scored 97 goals and had 55 assists in 56 games for the bantam triple-A North Shore Winter Hawks in 2001-02 before the Giants drafted him first overall in the 2002 WHL draft. The five-foot-10, 165-pound forward had 32 goals and 25 assists in 48 games for the B.C. junior league's Quesnel Millionaires last season. The Giants called him up for a regular-season game and all four playoff games against eventual league champion Kelowna Rockets. "He basically stepped into our second-line centre spot from the minute he arrived," GM Scott Bonner said. "We haven't seen a guy in our league like that for a while." Bonner hopes Brule can keep himself in contention to win the WHL's scoring race. "I don't know if a 16-year-old has ever done that in our league," he said. Chiefs 4 Hitmen 2 CALGARY (CP) -- Former Prince George Cougars defenceman Scott Lynch scored the winning goal late in the second period as the Spokane Chiefs beat the Calgary Hitmen 4-2. Jevon Desautels paced the Chiefs (9-2-0-2) attack with a goal and an assist, while Brad Schell had two helpers. Chad Klassen and former Hitmen defenceman Gary Gladue, another ex-Cat, also scored for the Chiefs. Tomas Troliga and Riley Merkley scored for the Hitmen. Spokane netminder Barry Brust stopped 23 shots to improve his record to 5-2. Calgary netminder Gerry Festa stopped 22 shots. What's up at the house? (CP) -- Four Americans playing in the Western Junior B Hockey League have to pack up their bags and go home. A failed appeal to Hockey Canada by the players, their parents and teams means they are not allowed to play in Canada. The issue was sparked by a player transfer agreement between Hockey Canada and USA Hockey that expired in the spring and was not renewed. The players had hoped a plea to Hockey Canada outlining why it was important for them to remain with their current teams would allow them to continue the season, even though they haven't been playing since the beginning of the month. Teams got word Oct. 1 that the players would likely not be allowed to stay the season. That's when those involved began a letter-writing campaign to try to keep the Americanborn players in Ontario. A letter on that date from Frank Libera, the chair of Hockey Canada's national appeals committee, regarding Strathroy Rocket John Kennedy said: "The . . . committee has concluded that there is an absence of a compelling need for this player to transfer from USA Hockey." Kennedy is a defenceman from Saginaw, Mich. David Honsberger, president of the Rockets, said the closest U.S. junior team that Kennedy could play with is three hours from Saginaw. "And it's a level that's not as good as our hockey here," he said. Kennedy was residing with a family in Forest. Jake Grimes, head coach and GM of the Petrolia Jets, said Phil DeSimone, a forward from Williamsville, N.Y., will be "devastated" by the news. Although no official word came to the teams from Hockey Canada on Tuesday, Ontario Hockey Association president Brent Ladds confirmed the appeal of the appeal "failed." The Blast have seven American players who apparently are not affected because they are commuting to Sarnia and are older, he said.
