www.pgcitizen.ca | Thursday, July 9, 2009 25 worklife Economic indicator falters The Canadian Press TOKYO -- Japan's core machinery orders, a closely watched indicator of corporate capital spending, unexpectedly fell for a third month in May as uncertain prospects for a global economic recovery kept companies guarded. Core private sector machinery orders, which exclude volatile orders from electric power companies and shipbuilders, declined three per cent from April to 668.2 billion yen (US$7.1 billion), the government said Wednesday. While the result marks an improvement from the 5.4 per cent decline recorded in April, it widely undershots a 1.8 per cent rise forecast in a Kyodo news agency market survey. The result marked the lowest value on record since the government began compiling comparable data in April 1987. Like its Asian neighbours, Japan was battered by the plunge in global demand triggered by the U.S. financial crisis last year. The country's marquee brands including Toyota and Sony have been among the hardest hit, posting massive losses, cutting jobs and slashing production. Their aggressive moves have begun to pay off as they begin to replenish depleted stockpiles of cars and electronics. Machinery orders among manufacturers rose 5.4 per cent in May, helped by significant gains among automakers and general machinery companies. The overall slump in May stems largely from non-manufacturers, whose managers remain wary of investing in new equipment. Orders from non-manufacturers, including mining, finance and transportation companies, fell 6.9 per cent. "Orders from manufacturers are finding firmer ground and in some industries have actually started to turn back up," said Kyohei Morita, chief economist at Barclays Capital in Tokyo. "The concern remains the downtrend in orders from non-manufacturers, which are closely correlated with domestic demand." A key central bank survey of corporate sentiment last week showed that Japanese companies sharply reduced their capital spending plans and expect to cut expenditures by an average 9.4 per cent this fiscal year through March 2010. The media giant said Wednesday that Windsor's A Channel will remain on the air until at least Aug. 31, 2010, when its licence renewal term expires. The decision comes after the CRTC announced Monday that it has increased the size of a fund for local television stations to more than $100 million for the 2009-10 broadcast year, which means local TV would get more money. The Windsor station is one of three that CTV has considered closing as advertising revenues plunge, hurting the bottom lines of many traditional media. CTV and other major broadcasters such as Canwest had asked the CRTC to begin charging cable and satellite distributors for carrying their channels or they'd be forced to close underperforming local TV stations. Also on life support was a re-broadcasting tower in Wingham, Ont., which the broadcaster says it hopes to turn into a re-broadcast of the A Channel station based in London, Ont., pending approval by the CRTC.
