Arrangements in care of First Memorial Funeral Services, (250) 762-2299. William Augustine Hughes passed away peacefully May 22, 2010, Duncan, BC. Born in Dublin's South Side, August 24, 1928. Liam, thirteenth born of a family that led to 6 children and 2 adults. A few months short of his 82nd birthday Bill passed away having had, in his own words "a long run". Liam outlived not only his parents, Michael and Brigid (nee Kinlough) also his sister Bridie, brothers Jack, Mick, Paddy and Brendan. Though not the tallest, he did tell tall tales as expected from a good Irishman! Trained as a draughtsman he worked briefly in that field before joining Dunnes for many years and then fate and a wee bit of an incident on a motorbike resulted in Bill coming to Canada with his old friend Eddie "for a year" as one of the first volunteer Frontier Lay Apostles. In Prince George, Bill met another volunteer from Dublin and it was not long before Eileen White chased him down and they enjoyed 51 long years together. Government employment, working with those seeking jobs as well as those new to the country, was briefly interrupted with a wife and four children to Eire - the first visit in 15 years but not their last. Retirement saw Mom and Dad travel around the world, visiting their children, holidaying along with a volunteering stint in the UN Refugee program in Thailand - appropriate as they were immigrants themselves. Bill and Eileen then moved from PG to Chem-ainus in 1995 and enjoyed Vancouver Island life, making new friends and being involved with Meals On Wheels and other programs. Lack of training on piano and voice did not deter Bill from trying his hand at both, joining in or solo with "Girls Were Made to Love and Kiss" taking a close second to "You Are My Heart's Delight". Bill was always ready with a story to entertain or a bite and a drink to fill you up. Friends old and new were always welcome to visit or stay at a moment's notice. Bill is remembered by his wife Eileen, children Phyl, Pat, Joan and Chris, grand children Bailey, Zak, Megan, Sara, Ashten and Hanna, great granddaughter Rowan, and many friends and relatives both here and overseas including the old country - Hughes, Bellew, McGreevy, Stanley, etc., and in particular Lena. A service was held in Chemai-nus with all his family in attendance May 25th where he was buried. A second service to be held at Doma no Chapel, 6500 Southridge Ave, June 2, 7pm to celebrate again with his Northern friends. Eileen will be in attendance. Later Eileen will take him home for his final trip to Ireland. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice. watch for our "LOBSTeR feST" in tune!
