FRIDAY, MAY 20, 201 1 | WWW.PGCITIZEN.CA 21 ARTS BRIEFS Filming begins on Batman, The Dark Knight Rises LOS ANGELES (AP) — Writer-director Christopher Nolan has called Action! on his latest Batman film. Warner Bros. Pictures says principal photography began this week on The Dark Knight Rises, the conclusion to Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The film will be shot in India, England, Scotland and the American cities of New York, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. Christian Bale returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman. Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman are also returning to the cast. Newcomers for the third installment in the franchise include Anne Hathaway, Marion Co-tillard, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Gordon-Levitt, Hardy and Cotillard also appeared in Nolan’s 2010 film Inception. The Dark Knight Rises is slated for release on July 20, 2012. Titanic to be re-released in 3-D NEW YORK (AP) — Titanic is coming back to theatres in 3-D. Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox announced Thursday that James Cameron’s Oscar-winning film will be rereleased April 6 next year. The rerelease is to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Titanic setting sail on April 10. Cameron says the film was “painstakingly” converted to 3-D and promises “an epic experience.” Released in 1997, Titanic won 11 Academy Awards and grossed more than $1.8 billion worldwide. That’s second only to Cameron’s Avatar. Bemie Madoff's daughter-in-law Sjets deal or memoir NEW YORK (AP) — Bernard Madoff’s daughter-in-law has a deal for an “intimate and heartbreaking” memoir. Blue Rider Press, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA) announced Thursday that Stephanie Madoff-Mack will have a book coming out in December. The memoir, currently untitled, will go “behind closed doors” as Madoff confesses to his family in December 2008 about his multibillion dollar Ponzi scheme. Madoff, 73, is serving a 150-year prison sentence in North Carolina, after admitting that his investment advisory service was a giant pyramid scheme. Mark Madoff, Bernard Madoff’s son and Madoff-Mack’s husband, killed himself in December 2010. Kindle e-book sales surpass hardcover plus paperback sales NEW YORK (AP) — Ama-zon.com says it’s selling more electronic books than printed books, less than four years after it started selling e-books. Since April 1, Amazon.com Inc. says it has sold 105 ebooks for every 100 printed books, including printed books for which there is no electronic edition. The comparison excludes free e-books. Printed books include both hardcover and paperback books. Amazon said in July that e-book sales had outstripped hardcover sales. Amazon also says the latest and cheapest version of its Kindle e-book reading device is the bestseller of the line, five weeks after it was introduced. It costs $114, and shows ads in standby mode. Alice’s new nightmare Senior shock rocker working on a sequel to his classic Welcome to my Nightmare Lynn SAXBERG Postmedia News Veteran shock rocker Alice Cooper is looking forward to the day he becomes a grandfather, which is probably not far off. One of his three children got married this year, the first of his brood to fly the coop, and he found himself imagining a future filled with grandbabies. “I’m so looking forward to that,” says the 63-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer who lives in Phoenix, AZ. “I’m getting tired of Christmas coming along and not going to Toys ‘R Us. With grandkids, you can start doing the toy buying again.” Although best known for highly theatrical heavy-metal productions that involve gallons of fake blood and gruesome imagery, the monster of rock, born Vincent Furnier, is sure to be a devoted grandpa. He recently celebrated his 35th wedding anniversary and has been sober since the 1980s. These days, his greatest obsession is golf, but he’s also busy working on a sequel to his best-selling 1975 solo album, Welcome to My Nightmare, and it’s definitely not a soothing bedtime story. Co-written with legendary producer Bob Ezrin, the concept for the original Nightmare album was a journey through the nightmares of a child, expressed in songs like Devil’s Food, The Black Widow and Cold Ethyl. Now Cooper is writing with Ezrin again to update the horrors. “What would Alice’s nightmare be 35 years later?” Cooper says to describe their starting point. “Well, there’s technology. Alice is a techno-tard. Disco is still a big enemy of his so disco would be in there. But I allowed this album to have a great sense of humour, even though there’s some very, very dark moments.” submitted These days, his greatest obsession is golf, but he's also busy working on a sequel to his best-selling 1975 solo album, Welcome to My Nightmare, and it's definitely not a soothing bedtime story. Recorded with most of the original band members, the iconic singer-songwriter says the new record has a vintage ’70s sound, and is “as good if not better than the original.” But fans will have to wait until fall at the earliest to hear it because Cooper will spend most of the summer touring North America and Europe. It’s going to be a classic, the star vows. “I designed the show to be a little bit more of a big, thick, heavy Alice show, and I added a new guitar Jamie PORTMAN Postmedia News Adele tops Billboard's Hot 100 The Canadian Press The top 10 country and pop albums and singles according to Billboard Magazine for the week ending May 28. Manager Phil Brock says the 60-year-old actor was found unconscious on May 11. He is hospitalized in critical condition. * CONAWAY player so I have three lead guitar players now. That solidifies that big heaviness. “If you know Alice Cooper’s show, you know there’s a certain formula to it. We play all the hits. We never let an audience get bored at any point. That’s one thing we absolutely refuse to do. If you turn your head, you’re going to miss something.” Of course, an artist of Alice Cooper’s stature - he’s sold millions of albums over the years - really doesn’t have to spend months on the road, or even make new records. So why does he do it? ‘You tour because you want to, you make records because you want to,” he says. “It’s nice not to have somebody breathing down your neck saying, ‘when is this going to be done,’ or ‘you’re over budget’ or ‘it’s not commercial enough.’ Now you’re making the records you want to make and you’re making them when you want to make them, and you put them out when you want to put them out.” Cooper says he’s in better shape now than he was when he was 30. “I used to be a distance runner,” he says. “I’m not a big eater, I don’t sleep a lot and I don’t smoke or drink so touring for me is pretty easy. I was kinda built for it.” It appears that being on the road has not taken much of a toll on Cooper’s personal life. The secret to a long and happy marriage, he says, is to treat your wife like she’s your girlfriend. “I am smart enough to keep romance in the marriage,” he says. “Most guys don’t get it. How many guys know what colour your wife’s eyes are? How many know what size shoes she wears? What colours does she wear? I can go shopping and buy a full outfit for my wife. That’s what keeps it going.” As for retirement, he says the word is not in his vocabulary. “I took a year off one time,” he says, “and it nearly drove me crazy because I missed it. There are two places I feel totally at home: On stage with a mic, and on the road. That’s basically where I know what I’m doing. “I don’t drink, I don’t smoke and I don’t go out looking for girls. I go to sleep and get up the next morning and play golf. That’s my party.” I HOLLYWOOD — John Lennon’s original hand-written lyrics for Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds have fetched $230,000 at a massive auction of Hollywood memorabilia.
