FRIDAY, JULY 29, 201 1 | WWW.PGCITIZEN.CA B.C. 7 NEWS IN BRIEF Campsite closed as bear makes smorgasbord of campers' supplies VICTORIA (CP) — A remote Vancouver Island beach popular with surfers is also popular with one very persistent black bear. Two wilderness campsites at Sombrio Beach, 57 kilometres west of Sooke, in Juan de Fuca Provincial Park, have been closed while officials try to snare the hungry bruin. No one has been hurt, but campers say the bear has stealing food for days. James Younger says the creature made off with some of his groceries before he even had time to cache the apples and carrots in a tree. Another camper says the bear climbed into the back of his pickup to munch on food stored there. A trap has now been set in hopes of catching, and possibly relocating, the bear. B.C. to get new phone code in 2013 VANCOUVER (CP) — British Columbia is getting a new area code to add to the three that already exist. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission says area code 236 may be assigned to lead new telephone numbers in B.C. starting June 1, 2013. The new area code is needed because the province is expected to run out of telephone numbers by August 2016. Area code 604 managed to do the job all on its own for the entire province until 1996, when 250 came along to lead phone numbers outside the Greater Vancouver area. In 2001, area code 778 and 10-digit dialing made their debut to serve Greater Vancouver, before being extended across the province in 2008. Pair drive head-first into train, jump clear AGASSIZ (CP) — RCMP in Agassiz say two Fraser Valley men pulled a dangerous stunt by driving on train tracks and jumping from their truck seconds before it collided with a train. Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth says alcohol was involved in the incident in which police found a truck with both doors open wedged under the front engine of a CP Rail train. She says witnesses reported the man behind the wheel of the truck had driven around the railway arms that were flashing and lowered to block traffic from crossing the railway tracks. Hollingsworth says the 21-year-old Chilliwack man who recently got his driver’s licence was given a ticket for various infractions including failing to remain at the scene of an accident and failing to a obey traffic control device. The driver was also given a 90-day driving suspension and his vehicle was towed but neither he nor his 23-year-old passenger from Ag-gasiz were hurt in the crash. Police say they are considering possible charges in the incident. Woman slain in Surrey office Andrea WOO and Medha Postmedia News SURREY—A young woman is dead after a daytime stabbing Thursday at a newspaper office in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey. Police were called to the paper, located on the second floor of a strip mall, around 11:30 a.m. for reports of a stabbing. It was confirmed shortly afterward that one person had died and another was arrested. The victim is Ravinder Bhangu, an administrative assistant at the weekly English/Punjabi newspaper, The Vancouver Sun has learned. A third person also suffered minor injuries while attempt to assist her and was taken to hospital for minor injuries, said Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the Integrated Homicide Investigating Team, which has taken over the investigation. A man was arrested at the scene and is not co-operating with police. Pound said the man is refusing to provide officers with his identification. Bhangu, who is in her early 20s, had married in India before coming to Canada about three years ago. She had told friends of marital problems and moved in with her aunt about three months ago, according to several friends who spoke with The Sun. Bhangu also taught dance at an arts club in Surrey. Dozens of people stood around the newspaper office on Thursday afternoon as police investigators cordoned off the area and interviewed witnesses. First Nations want children's watchdog re-appointed for second term The Canadian Press VANCOUVER — A group of First Nations leaders in B.C. wants the children’s watchdog re-appointed for a second term, saying they’ve supported her work since she began in the job in 2006. The BC Assembly of First Nations, First Nations Summit and the Union of BC Indian Chiefs say that during her five-year term, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond has provided critical insight into the state of child protection in the province. An all-party parliamentary committee is deciding whether Turpel-Lafond should be re-appointed to a second, five-year term in office after her current term ends in November. The First Nations groups say Turpel-Lafond has provided recommendations to both the federal and provincial governments on issues such as child poverty and the Youth Criminal Justice Act. They say as a former judge, a mother and aboriginal woman, she has unique experience to represent the province’s children. During her first term, Turpel-Lafond lambasted the B.C. government for failing to hand over files or follow through on recommendations to prevent the death and injury of children in care. RCMP investigate the scene of a stabbing at the Saach de Awaaz newspaper in Surrey on Thursday. Witness say a female employee died after being stabbed by a male at the newspaper's offices. A male was taken into police custody. § YOUR CITY MATTERS princ'eTeorge July 29, 2011 c w m\ % AWARDS FOR I VCKUJNCB Vs, Gold Level Quality COUNCIL, COMMITTEE, JOB POSTINGS COMMISSION & BOARD MEETINGS Accountina & Purchasina Clerk Regular Meetings of Council Mondays, August 8th and August 22nd Council Chambers - 7:00pm Advisory Design Panel Wednesday, August 3 - 12:00 p.m. Council meetings are broadcast live on Shaw Cable 10, and Council agendas are available on our website.
