The Brazilian didn’t tap and toppled when referee (Big) John McCarthy stepped in and the champ finally let go of the standing guillotine choke. Jones (15-1) becomes the first 205-pound champion since Chuck (The Iceman) Liddell to make back-to-back successful title defences. “He looked phenomenal. Jon Jones is the real deal,” UFC president Dana White said. “I just don’t see anybody beating this guy any time soon.” The main event took fight of the night honours, earning Jones and Machida an extra US$75,000 each. Jones, 24, has had a banner year - dethroning Mauricio (Shogun) Rua and beating former champs Quinton (Rampage) Jackson and Machida as well as up-and-comer Ryan (Darth) Bader. The Air Canada Centre was rocking as Jones emerged, working out the kinks as he approached the cage surrounded by security. At 6-4, Jones had three inches in height and 10.5 in reach on the Brazilian. But the elusive Machida, who had the crowd behind him, darted in and out and got Jones’ attention in the first round with quick attacks and some counters. At one point, the Braziian southpaw drove Jones backwards. It was more of the same in the second. Jones scored with some kicks but was hurt on the counter. A Jones takedown restored the balance with a nasty elbow carving open a gash on Machida’s forehead. Machida got back up, only to have McCarthy call in the doctor. The fight was allowed to continue and Jones stunned Machida (17-3)with a punch, then locked in the standing guillotine choke at the fence. In the co-main event, former heavyweight champion Frank Mir rallied to submit Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the first round. Mir earned $75,000 for the submission of the night. It was a vicious ending, gut-wrenching to watch. Nogueira hurt Mir early on with strikes, knocking him wobbly with a right. But Mir (16-5) survived and then showed some elite jiu-jitsu, rolling out of trouble and then forcing Nogueira to tap to a vicious If9 I m / 9 American Jon Jones (right) lands a punch on Brazil's Lyoto Machida during their World Light Heavyweight Championship bout during UFC 140 in Toronto on Saturday. kimura at 3:38 that had the crowd gasping as the arm was shown bent at a horrific angle in replays on the big screen. Doctors worked on Nogueira (33-7-1 with one no contest) for some time after Mir exited the cage. His arm was immobilized when he was finally led out. White said Nogueira’s shoulder or elbow was probably broken in the submission. Earlier, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (Rodrigo’s twin brother) pounded out a first-round TKO over former light-heavyweight champion Tito (The People’s Champ) Ortiz. Blink and you’ll miss it: Canadian Hominick loses in seven seconds at UFC 140 Gregory STRONG The Canadian Press TORONTO — Canadian featherweight Mark (The Machine) Hominick stole the show when the UFC made its debut in Toronto last April by going the distance in a five-round thriller. It was the complete opposite on Saturday night at UfC 140. Hominick lasted just seven seconds before losing by technical knockout to Chan Sung Jung, barely giving fans at Air Canada Centre time to sit in their seats after greeting the Canadian with a standing ovation. “I just threw a punch and he was on the ground,” Jung said through a translator. Jung earned US$75,000 for scoring the knockout of the night. Hominick, who fell to 20-10, missed with a left hand and Jung - nicknamed the Korean Zombie - caught him with a punch to the head. The South Korean landed a few more blows before the fight was stopped. “I fought out of character,” Hominick said. “I don’t think anybody’s ever seen me come out with a wild left hook leading the fight. I fought not as composed as I normally am. I just came out too aggressive and paid the consequences.” Jung, who was coming off a submission win over Leonard (Bad Boy) Garcia in March, improved to 12-3. He was asked how he felt about training for months to have the bout last just a few seconds. “If I knew it was going to be over this fast, I wouldn’t have worked out so hard,” Jung said with a chuckle. Hominick lost to UFC champion Jose Aldo in the co-main event at Rogers Centre last spring. Fans were hoping for an encore performance from the Thamesford, Ont., fighter in the first bout on the main card Saturday. UFC ring announcer Bruce Buffer’s introduction for the Canadian could barely be heard over the crowd’s roar. The quick finish left almost everyone surprised. “It was over so fast that it took me a few seconds to realize what just happened,” Jung said. “When I hit him I knew immediately it was over.” The result tied Todd Duffee for the fastest UFC knockout. Duffee did it against Edmonton heavyweight Tim (The Thrashing Machine) Hague at UFC 102. Both fighters agreed with the referee’s decision to stop the fight. “He thought he saw his eyes go after he punched him,” Jung’s translator said. The fight was the first for Hominick since the death of coach Shawn Tompkins, who was 37 when he died of a heart attack in August. Hominick had Tompkins’ brother Fred in his corner for this fight. “It’s tough but we’ve been the same crew for the last 15 years,” Hominick said. “So it’s the familiar faces and the familiar family that’s always there together. So having [Fred] around is comforting. “Shawn always said that too. We win together, we lose together. So tonight we’re losing together.” Lower the energy cost of any building with WALLTITE ECO" A DIVISION OF IQ BUILDERS LTD. www.iqbuilders.ca High Performance Insulation & Air Barrier 2 System g 3 CO 250-562-6161 Lakers successfully trade Odom Greg BEACHAM The Associated Press EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Lakers have traded forward Lamar Odom and a second-round draft pick to the Dallas Mavericks for a first-round pick and an US$8.9 million trade exception, capping Los Angeles’ stunning 72-hour breakup with last season’s Sixth Man of the Year. The Lakers and Mavericks announced the deal Sunday night, three days after Odom learned Los Angeles was attempting to trade him in a megadeal for New Orleans superstar Chris Paul. After the NBA blocked that trade, Odom declined to report to the Lakers’ opening day of training camp on Friday. Odom then requested a trade, and the Lakers improbably swung a deal with the rival Mavericks, who swept Los Angeles out of the second round of last season’s playoffs. Odom will aid the Mavs’ recovery from Tyson Chandler’s departure.
